OOlga AtbashyanA truly wonderful stay at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang.
What stood out to me most is the hotel’s timeless aesthetic. It’s not trying to be “Instagrammable” — instead, it leans into classic elegance, which makes the experience feel calm, refined, and genuinely relaxing.
The pool area is especially peaceful — perfect for slowing down and unwinding. Breakfasts were consistently good, with a pleasant atmosphere that matches the overall charm of the hotel.
I also really appreciated the thoughtful service. In the afternoon, staff would check in on the room, and in the evening they even offered additional water after check-in — small details that make a big difference. I also noticed how warmly they celebrated a guest’s birthday during breakfast, which added to the feeling of genuine hospitality.
Overall, a very pleasant experience with a strong sense of care and tradition. Would gladly return.

WWufawutianlaQuesto appartamento è un po' lontano dalla strada dei murales di George Town; una corsa in taxi costerebbe circa 20 MYR. Non ci sono molti ristoranti nelle vicinanze, quindi dovresti prendere un taxi. Un taxi per Penang Hill costerebbe oltre 40 MYR! In secondo luogo, la stanza è esposta a ovest, quindi il sole pomeridiano è così intenso che non ho osato aprire le tende. Inoltre, sia il soggiorno che la camera da letto principale si affacciano su un cimitero, il che è piuttosto spaventoso di notte, quindi non ho osato aprire le tende. Poi, non capisco perché una camera d'albergo che costa 600-700 MYR a notte non offra articoli da toeletta. Sono a corto di soldi? L'appartamento non fornisce acqua in bottiglia, solo un distributore d'acqua, ma i bicchieri sono molto sporchi! Preferisco l'acqua in bottiglia quando viaggio, anche se penso che sarebbe più comodo per le famiglie con neonati preparare il latte artificiale. Un altro vantaggio è la piscina a sfioro sul tetto, che ha un ambiente fantastico. Mio figlio ci ha nuotato due volte e l'appartamento fornisce anche giochi d'acqua, che adora. Tuttavia, non ci tornerei sicuramente e non lo consiglierei. Consiglio a tutti di soggiornare in altri appartamenti; dato che dovrete comunque prendere un taxi, alloggiare un po' più lontano non ha molta importanza!

DDwaynismeI would say this stay is absolute value for money. The room was incredibly spacious, spotlessly clean, and looked very elegant despite the cheap price. It was a very comfortable stay overall, and the staff were incredibly attentive and friendly. They also have a great swimming pool that is perfect for both adults and kids. I will definitely look to stay here again!

Personale professionale, soprattutto alla reception. Hanno un sorriso genuino e sono pronti ad aiutare. Direi che sono più proattivi di quegli hotel a cinque stelle in cui ho soggiornato a Penang e Langkwawi durante questo viaggio.
Tuttavia, vorrei davvero che il personale del concierge (di turno di notte) fosse più cauto e attento nella gestione delle spedizioni, compresi i pacchi consegnati in hotel. Avrebbero potuto controllare l'identità di chi ritira il pacco invece di non convalidarlo e permettere a chiunque di andare allo sportello per ritirarlo da solo. L'hotel ha una vibrazione così confortevole e tranquilla, con un bel interno estetico e piacevole. La stanza era spaziale, incredibilmente pulita e ben mantenuta. Mi piaceva soprattutto il letto e le mutande, così comodo che ho avuto una grande notte di sonno. Ottimo servizio anche dal personale. Un solido 10/10

SSteve WOur stay at Citadines Connect was fabulous. It was really quiet yet the location was nice and central (near lots of sights and great food places). We were lucky enough to be in block B which faces another building so there was literally no traffic noise and we barely noticed other travellers because of the insulation between rooms. The bathroom was very clean and serviced daily beautifully. The staff helped us a lot when trying to book our next steps of our journey to Ipoh. Finally, the infinity pool was a dream, particularly because we had it all to ourselves! Nothing quite like listening to the call to prayer while floating in a crystalline pool 4 floors you. This hotel was the best - highly recommended.

Abbiamo prenotato una camera doppia e ci siamo rimasti per due notti. Sebbene gli interni e la posizione fossero discreti per un hotel a 3 stelle, l'esperienza è stata complessivamente deludente a causa del servizio e della gestione scadenti.
Innanzitutto, la reception ci ha fornito solo una tessera per la nostra camera. Anche dopo aver spiegato che saremmo usciti separatamente, hanno affermato di essere a corto di tessere e di aver dovuto conservarle per gli ospiti in arrivo. Ho soggiornato in innumerevoli hotel nel corso degli anni e non mi sono mai trovato in una situazione del genere. Un amico che ha soggiornato qui anni fa ha avuto lo stesso problema, quindi è chiaro che la situazione persiste da anni. Le tessere non sono costose o speciali: l'hotel ha solo circa 50 camere, quindi non ci sono scuse per non averne abbastanza. A peggiorare le cose, fanno pagare RM50 per ogni tessera smarrita!
La nostra camera doppia aveva due letti singoli super, che potrebbero risultare angusti per gli ospiti più grandi, quindi è un aspetto da tenere a mente.
Un altro problema era la porta della camera, che non si chiude automaticamente. Bisogna tirarla e controllarla manualmente per assicurarsi che sia sicura, cosa che non ci si aspetterebbe da un hotel moderno.
La nostra prima mattina, il personale delle pulizie ha bussato e suonato il campanello alle 10:00 chiedendo di pulire la camera. Certo, ci siamo dimenticati di appendere il cartello ”Non disturbare”, ma le 10:00 sembrano troppo presto. Di solito le pulizie non sono programmate dopo mezzogiorno?
Non vale la pena pagare un extra per la colazione. Il cibo non era appetitoso e il caffè era pessimo, quindi abbiamo saltato completamente la colazione il secondo giorno.
Ciò che ci ha scioccato di più è stato tornare in camera e trovarla completamente aperta dopo le pulizie, perché non l'avevano chiusa completamente. Per fortuna non mancava nulla, ma a quel punto eravamo troppo esausti per sollevare il problema, soprattutto perché il personale della reception si era già mostrato riluttante ad aiutarci. Non potevano fornirci una tessera magnetica aggiuntiva, eppure in qualche modo non si sono fatti problemi a lasciare la nostra camera senza sicurezza. È una grave mancanza sia nella sicurezza che nell'assistenza di base agli ospiti.
In sintesi: nonostante gli interni gradevoli e la posizione favorevole, la gestione è decisamente carente. Per essere una struttura a tre stelle, il servizio sembra più quello di una a una stella. Con opzioni migliori disponibili a Georgetown, consiglierei di soggiornare altrove per un'esperienza più affidabile e curata.

RRay Mak Hon KitWe stayed two nights at Summer Tree Hotel Penang during our trip to Penang.
One of the main reasons I chose this hotel was its location — right in the heart of Georgetown near Komtar, which makes it very convenient for getting around. It also offers parking, which is a big plus in this area. Another reason was the late check-in option, as I was having dinner with a friend in Nibong Tebal, which is quite a distance away. The pricing was also reasonable, making it an attractive choice overall.
Upon arrival, however, parking was already full. I had to park at a space right in front of the hotel where delivery trucks usually arrive in the morning. This made me slightly anxious, as I was worried I might be asked to move my car early the next day.
The lobby is simple but modern, with a creative, slightly hipster and artistic vibe — almost like a small modern art space. There are vending machines offering snacks, drinks, and essentials for travelers. At the back, there are toilets and also a laundry area with washing machines. A small coffee corner and even an old-school arcade game machine add a nice nostalgic touch, which was a pleasant surprise.
However, the room itself was quite disappointing.
While the room is basic and small — which I don’t mind — the flooring under the carpet felt severely damaged. Walking on it felt uneven and almost “soft,” as if the ground beneath had deteriorated. It gave a very uncomfortable and unsettling feeling, possibly due to moisture or termite damage underneath.
Another concern was the bathroom design. There is an elevated step at the entrance, which becomes a clear trip hazard. I actually tripped once when entering. Even after that, I had to be very cautious because the floor just outside the bathroom is extremely slippery. Every entry and exit required full attention.
There is also no proper shelf or platform inside the shower area to place shampoo or shower gel. We had to repeatedly open and close the glass door just to access toiletries during showering, which was inconvenient. Only basic amenities like shower gel and liquid hand soap were provided.
The room was also advertised with a decent view, but the window was covered with a mesh, and since we were on the first floor, there was very little to see.
On the positive side, the water dispenser outside the room was very convenient.
The next day, parking was still full, so we had to park at a private area nearby. Since it was raining, the walk back to the hotel was quite inconvenient as well.
Overall, while the location and concept of the hotel are strong, the room condition and safety design issues need serious attention. I would strongly recommend replacing the carpet flooring with vinyl wood flooring for durability and hygiene. As for the bathroom layout, improvements may be limited due to structure, but safety enhancements like anti-slip flooring would make a big difference.
