I stayed here five years ago and loved it to bits. This time was TERRIBLE. DO NOT BOOK THE NEW ROOMS. I had rooms in the main building last time and while they are old, they were built at a high standard and were very comfortable and give that lovely old hotel/resort feeling. It’s all soft carpet and solid walls and wall paper. Just gorgeous. Marble bathrooms and old art on the walls. Love love love. This time I thought I’d try the “newly renovated” rooms that had a fire place. But. They don’t tell you these rooms are out in an old building by the MAIN ROAD. You have to drag your own bags out all the way down to the main road, in the RAIN. It’s like you’re in the crappy car garage the parents renovated for the teen kids to get out house. It’s not as good as an AirBnB because you don’t have a kitchen like an actual house. You’re just in one crappy room with almost no decor, a cheap crappy bed head and a bathroom that looks like it was installed by a friend of a friend. It’s a classic landlord hack job of a renovation. Everything is leaking and rotting and full of mould. I got to the room and was absolutely devastated. I had booked two nights as respite mid way through a gruelling month long work trip. I had been in terrible hotels and motels and air bnbs and decided to spend $1400 on two nights of loveliness. Only to be greeted at the reception told to turn around and walk to a mouldy old room on a main road that had zero thought to the design and no care to those using the room. I called the reception and expressed how unhappy I was. They said they were fully booked but they could move me the next day in the morning. But then it took until 2pm to actually get the room. It was so much better and I’m grateful they did that. Frankly the only reason they have the stars they do it because they moved us. To me the newly renovated rooms have been made by someone who can’t see why people stay at Lilianfels to start with. They don’t understand you’re there to feel the rich old world charm of a resort. You want the feel of being in a ski field wealthy home, not a crappy airbnb with no kitchen. I understand they have that old building and they want to take advantage of it, but they’ve failed. Completely. It should be redone as two rooms one on each floor. Fill the two suites with antiques and lovely things and put a porter on them so no one has to lift a finger let along drag their bags out through the rain. Then charge anything you like. I’m not sure I’ll go back. Certainly not in their new rooms. Such a terrible shame.
