I would go back to Tsuruoka just for this hotel!
Especially loved the modern, clean onsen with views of the mountain.
Rooms were thoughtfully designed and the breakfast on the terrace had stunning stunning views.

È una buona esperienza, un hotel semplice, ma tutte le esigenze di base sono soddisfatte. La doccia calda è calda, il letto è pulito, il personale è così amichevole, la finestra lascia il sole in, ma si può anche usare la cortina di blackout, le scelte per la colazione sono limitate, ma ogni piatto è super bello. Sono così felice di essere rimasto lì:)

Located in a quiet neighborhood, staff is friendly and helpful. Limited parking space surrounding the hotel, but they got you covered, just check with the staff and they will sort it out for you.
Accommodation comes with free breakfast, and it's really amazing, you will be surprised by the varieties they served.

The location is indeed great, offering easy access to various facilities. Moreover, the proximity to the train station makes commuting incredibly convenient. The presence of a convenience store on the first floor adds to the ease of daily life. This combination truly enhances the overall staying experience. Overall, it seems like a wonderful and practical place to reside.

The hotel itself is old but comfortable. The ownership has changed and the hospitality is very poor. I was at breakfast and was told that the restaurant will be closed at 9:30. I thought they meant that that the last order would be 9:30.
The moment it was 9:30 they kicked us out. As I was having a business breakfast it was very rude.

Siamo stati molto contenti di soggiornare qui. La struttura ci ha accolto presto e ci ha permesso di lasciare i bagagli così abbiamo potuto fare la Ropeway ed arrivare fino in cima alla montagna ed ammirare un panorama pazzesco.
Abbiamo prenotato anche la vasca onsen privata - l’abbiamo trovata molto calda e ci siamo spaventati, ma poi ci siamo ricreduti provando quelle divise per genere ed erano meravigliose. Vorrei tornarci subito!
Colazione tipica giapponese, molto ricca, poco adatta per chi, come noi, vegetariano con poche alternative.
Zao Onsen è davvero un paesino bellino dove si possono fare tante cose. Molto vicino alla fermata del bus e comodissimo anche per il Lawson appena fuori.

Location: around 5 min walk to the station. Big lobby and friendly reception staff.
Autumn: no air conditioning due to season change, can be stuffy in a way. Do check with the hotel if u travelling during season change.

The location is great!! The shuttle service runs early in the morning, such as before 5am. we rented a car and needed to return it at the airport early in the morning, so the location of the hotel was really convenient. The amenities were prepared in the lobby, and it was self-service to take them to the room. The bed was surprisingly hard, but I can't complain for this reasonable price. there is Lawson at G floor.

MMichal LihockyThe room was beautiful, with tatami, yukata, tabi, and a little bag with towels to take with you when you go to their proper outdoor onsen that's right across the street. The onsen has good amenities, has 2 baths one indoor that's around 42 - 45 degrees, and outdoor one that's usually cooler around 38 - 42. The best thing about that onsen is that there usually not many people there, often I was there alone.
The breakfast was great too, there were at least around 20 - 30 different dishes/foods to choose from. The hotel also sells discounted ski passes, and has it's own ski/snowboard rental service for lower price than most of the rental services nearby (the snowboard was of great quality, the shoes not so much).
When we checked out, the hotel arranged a van to take us to the bus terminal as well. Overall, one of the best hotels I've ever stayed at in Japan. 👌🏻

ZZoeAbsolutely lovely place. At first I thought I'd be uncomfortable with how spaceous the room was (I'm a very jumpy solo traveller), but the room was just so comfy with an excellent view. The heater was a bit hot, but there was an electric fan too, so all was great.
The hotel allows you to have a free 50 minute private bath each night, and the private baths are amazing, able to accommodate up to five persons and with windows to let in the light and stuff. Excellent onsen water -- very acidic and very hot. Takes some time getting used to the heat, but once you do it's a heavenly experience. There are also public baths (free of charge) that you could enjoy throughout the night and into early morning (they're closed for cleaning only during 9-12 in the morning), one indoor and one outdoor, both connected to one another. The outdoor one is a bit small, but it's so refreshing to be able to flee from the stifling indoor onsen to enjoy the crisp winter air while soaking up in the heat.

The special thing about this place is that there are 5 private outdoor onsens as well as a gender-segregated public bath and one mixed gender outdoor bath (for this one, you need to wear a bathing suit). If you are shy of exposing yourself or like taking photos, then those 5 private outdoor onsens are just perfect. I went in the autumn, which is cooling already and I can imagine what a treat it will be in winter with all the snow.
The hotel is located almost to the top of the hill. Either drive or call them ahead and they will pick you up and drop you off in the vicinity.
My room is quaint and Japanese-styled. I didn't pay for the meal package as I knew I'd would be busy trying out all the onsens available. They are all open 24hrs. By the way, private onsen number 1 and 5 are the best and most picturesque!!!
I'm doing all a favor and posting all the pictures of the private onsens.

The room was huge, much too large for just a solo traveler like me but it would have been perfect if I had brought my wife and child along. The onsen quality was great, albeit the fittings at the shower area were a bit old. The food was hands down amazing and featured great local produce. Honestly there was too much for one person to finish! What I especially liked was that they had a separate room on the first floor where if it was too early for you to check in, you could drop your luggage off, change, and then grab your gear and head to the slopes. Same thing if you intend to charge the slopes a bit more on your last day, just leave your stuff in the storage room, hit the slopes, come back and change out, hit the onsen for the last time, then go off. Definitely recommending this place to my friends visiting Zao.

HHui Ling ShiLoved this place!! The host was so lovely and held conversation with us even with our broken Japanese haha, gave us maps / guides for the Dewa Sanzan and even asked us about our itinerary for the next day (as we were going to climb the other 2 mountains, he made sure we knew the bus timings).
It was such a nice traditional ryokan, with comfy tatami, public ofuro (hot steaming bath that felt great after climbing Hagurosan), yukata, and even tea powder and biscuits set out in the room :”) Our room had a wash basin and sofa chairs as well, but not sure if that's for all rooms. We paid 660yen each for breakfast taken away (2 big onigiri balls!) but couldn't have dinner added on (so make sure you check beforehand, because most places in the town close by 5pm).
Overall 100% recommend staying here! Loved our stay, thank you :)

UUtente ospiteNice and clean business hotel very near the Yamagata train station. Location is top notch! Basic hotel with everything you'd need. There is an artificial onsen on the 14th floor, which was good for a soak after a long day. Breakfast buffet was basic but tasty. Warm foods like rice, miso soup, bacon, stir fried veggies, etc were available in addition to some pastries and bread with butter and jams.
Will definitely stay again when in the Yamagata area.

RRosina KimIt’s quite a big hotel, 3 buildings are connected and there are many rooms. The rooms are a bit outdated but still maintained well. Service was good and flexible. Transportation to the village is quite necessary when the roads are covered by snow, especially with luggage. They have free shuttle bus which is great.
Best parts: 1. Dinner semi-buffet has unlimited alcoholic beverages including local sake, draft beer and wines. 2. Ski & board rental shop is right outside of the hotel. Although hotel only accept cash for the lift ticket, you can rent the gear (rental shop accepts credit card) and ski down the hill (20sec) to the cable ticket counter to buy ticket, pay by credit card. The location has lifts 5,6 and cable 4
