Banbury: hotel con bar

Stayed 2 nights as a couple - 12th/13th October. Have stayed here, before, earlier this year, and still, only one lift working. Which, every now and again, the management have to reset the computer controls, as it stops working. About time this was sorted. Room 226 ………….. Bed/linen/bathroom very clean, but showing signs of wear. Desk unit has the plastic veneer lifting off. Net curtain filthy with holes in it, card light slot and heating control, very worn with constant use. In general, needs TLC. Bar area very worn, with torn seats on the leather settees. Really needs furniture replacing. Thyme restaurant, a short Beefeater/Brewers Fayre type menu. In general, it has same food, as other Whitbread restaurants. Well cooked and prepared, but, not good to see food being plated up, in full view. We all know what goes on behind the scenes in restaurants, but I don’t need to see my curry, being poured from a plastic bag, that the cook (can’t call him a chef), has just cut open, with a pair of scissors. Or the soup, being microwaved in a plastic box. We had to ask the staff to put on some heating, practically, everyone dining, had an outside coat on, to keep warm. Not good. In general, no complaints about staff, all were friendly. But, prices starting to be not value for money.

In the past I have been delighted by everything about my stay in the Wroxton House Hotel. But this time I was a lot less happy, and was really disappointed by the official reaction when I explained this. I travel regularly, North - South and back, and have always thought that I had found the perfect halfway house. I am going to have to look elsewhere now for my regular trips, I fear. Some things were the same; the little village was delightful, pretty thatched cottages lining the street. The hotel car park was spacious, and the building from outside was charming. The food in the hotel restaurant was, as always, very good. Excellent choice, beautifully presented, served by friendly yet professional staff, in pleasant surroundings. But unlike previous stays, this time my stay was spoiled by two features. Firstly, there were three problems with the plumbing in my bathroom: the washbasin drained away very slowly indeed, leaving the dirty water to hang around and leave soap scum; the lavatory flush was very temperamental, it sometimes needed four or five pushes to actually flush; and the cold tap on the bath was stuck shut and could not be opened, so you couldn't control the water temperature at all. When I reported this, the Duty Manager wrote it all down to get the maintenance team to deal with it. Just right. But why hadn't the housekeeping team already reported it? Secondly, the pillows in the room were just abominable, making for a very uncomfortable night. They were all old, and well past their sell-by date. One had some filling coming out, very visible because the pillowcase had not been put on properly. The others were so very old and used by countless heads that they were worn hard and above all flat, about an inch thick only, so very uncomfortable. You hope for a pillow that is soft, plump, airy, not flat and hard. I took all 4 pillows down to Reception and showed them to the Duty Manager. Her response was that the thickness of pillows is an individual choice. No, these pillows were not thin by choice, Sarah, they were thin because they were old and worn out, and should have been replaced long ago. The first time that I have not had a good night's stay in the Wroxton House. Pity.

We were somewhat unsure about this hotel after reading the reviews but decided that there were enough good reviews to give it a chance. When booking, I made it quite clear that as both my wife and myself had some walking difficulties it was imperative we were on a floor without stairs for access or near to a lift, we were promised a low floor near to the lift. When we arrived at our room after having to climb stairs, I returned to reception to say we had not been given what we were promised, we were told that #1: The lift was not working, and #2: we could not be moved until the following day. The new room we were allocated the following day was fine, no long walks involved and no stairs to climb, so all was now well. For the rest of our Four night stay we enjoyed our stay very much, the hotel is in a very good location, has a private free and secure car park and with easy access to most of the places of interest in Banbury, and you are straight on to the road that takes you towards West Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds. The breakfast food was plenty with a good selection and choice. All the staff we encountered were very, very helpful, polite and accommodating. We have no real complaints about our stay in this splendid building of a hotel, and if the weather is good there is a lovely garden area to the rear of the building. Non ci vorrebbe molto per rendere questo posto buono. Il pub stesso è bello e il cibo buono. L'alloggio potrebbe essere migliore, tuttavia. Quando siamo andati al check-in, siamo arrivati 20 minuti prima. Invece di essere gentilmente detto che la nostra stanza non era abbastanza pronta e saremmo stati benvenuti a sederci fuori nel sole pomeriggio, ci fu improvvisamente detto “le stanze non sono pronte fino al 4, tornate”. Infatti, in generale non abbiamo trovato il personale particolarmente amichevole durante il nostro soggiorno. La stanza stessa era buona, niente di stupendo, ma abbastanza per quello che avevamo bisogno. Il bagno era un po’ strano, e i soldi erano stati spesi, e così era strano che alcune cose non fossero state sostituite, il pannello era estremamente tattolo e la scelta di pavimento nonostante fosse sembrato grigio, forse era sporca. Il principale settore per il miglioramento è tuttavia l’ingresso/uscita quando il pub è chiuso. Attualmente, non è il più accogliente, né il portapasti di cambio di maglia, dover navigare le vecchie macchie, asciugare macchie di gomma e buche con contenuti strani. Non abbiamo potuto ottenere un segnale WiFi nella nostra stanza, che, anche se non era una questione per noi, vedo che è una questione importante per altre famiglie. Il colazione è stato un bonus di benvenuto e la selezione continentale lasciata nella stanza e il frigo in fondo è stato generoso. Abbiamo goduto il nostro soggiorno nonostante i feedback forniti, che è destinato a essere costruttivo. 3.5 stelle sarebbe una riflessione giusta a mio parere.

Our room was spotlessly clean and looked like it had been recently decorated. It was a lovely room and we couldn't find fault with it. Had a meal and drinks in the pub. It provides typical pub meals. Very friendly staff. Great location being only 5 minutes walk from the centre of town.
