Amsterdam Marriott Hotel

Oud-West Amsterdam|2.81km dal A'DAM Lookout
We really enjoyed our stay. It is close to a lot of shops and restaurants. The Rijksmuseum is a short walk away. There is a tram stop also within walking distance. If you want to do a canal cruise, there are several that board across the street from the Rijksmuseum. There is a bus that goes right from the airport and stops across the street from the hotel. The bus stop to catch the bus back to the airport is just down the next block. Our room was pretty spacious for a European hotel. As a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum member, my suite night awards didn’t get approved (likely because the hotel was full) but I did get upgraded to an executive room. I enjoyed the personal welcome note and treats from the staff. They also dropped off a thank you note and a small gift of stroopwafels on our last night! The only issue we had with the room was that we couldn’t get the temperature as cool as we wanted but that wasn’t a dealbreaker. The room had a coffee maker and a small mini-fridge to keep water and drinks cool. The M Club Lounge at the hotel was great. My only complaint is that I do wish they’d vary their breakfast items each day. Five days of the exact same items got to be a little tiresome. We only made it to the club in the afternoon/evening twice during our stay. On Friday night, it was jam packed. People were circling like sharks. I really loved the coffee machine in the M Club and liked that they had bottled drinks we could take back to the room.

Generally was just Meh … While debatable if I would stay again I think its important to note some positives Pluses- - location was great, its on the other side of the river but the ferry is super easy and it was nice to be separated a little from all the crowds - We didn’t eat breakfast on site (more on that below), but we had a late dinner in the butcher restaurant. It was a nice cap to a long day of walking around and enjoying the sites - The Gym was wonderful and a lot better then we expected - The front desk was responsive to our complaints when we checked out and gave us a discount on our final bill. Negatives - Our room was never properly cleaned. It was a game of craps for what kind of towels we would got, sometimes 1 big one and 4 hand towels, other times 3 medium ones, 1 big one, and zero hand towels. This may seem silly but when you only have one towel between two folks it gets annoying real quick -There was a thick layer of dust on the shelf above the bed, which had to be at least several months to a year old. - You get absolutely no benefits based on your Marriott Status and that should of been made clearer before booking. All design hotels do it differently, so I wasn’t expecting free breakfast but usually you get a room upgrade, late checkout, or sort of some sort of acknowledgment that I have spent 75 nights of my life this year (and counting) in Marriott hotels - The front desk staff was just rude. If you asked for a towel for the gym, it seemed like you had asked for their first born. When I asked about a late check out, before even checking, I was told no. Then when I came back later in the day just to try again, the front desk clerk looked up our room and said it was possible till 1. The following morning at 12:01 they were calling asking why we weren’t out of the room yet… Overall- I’d say it was like staying in a Moxy for about twice the cost. Hotels are not cheap in Amsterdam and this was not an exception to that, but for the price range- I’d expect these basic aspects of a hotel taken care of.

A-Train Hotel

All hotel features, location, etc. can easily be read in other reviews. In short, it is a nice hotel, very well located and still surprisingly quiet if you get a courtyard view room. Compared to all the other 'small room' hotels in Amsterdam, this one features slightly bigger rooms, which makes quite a difference in terms of comfort and perception. If you love trains and railroads, you'll be in heaven because this hotel is inundated with train related decorations, posters, themes, etc. Rooms and bathrooms are clean. However, my window was open when I accessed my room (which I don't mind) but I had to deal with a pesky mosquito at night as a result. The hotel should really consider installing mosquito nets outside the windows. WiFi can be iffy and not always reliable (you need to get a bit lucky) but when it works, it works well. Breakfast is nothing special but sufficient. You'll be eating in what resembles train compartments, so that's kind of cool. Now, for the more frustrating experience, here's what hapened. When I checked in, I was greeted by a very friendly gentlemen. Since I travel to Amsterdam often for business, I am still looking for a hotel where I could stay on an almost weekly basis, so the next morning I asked another man who was working the reception if I could have a deal on a room going forward. They had a room left for the next week and he was willing to give me a deal if I paid cash without requesting an invoice. Come on now! Are you serious? I am traveling on business and as a consultant, it's not like I carry loads of cash I'm trying to launder. I was really surprised such 'official' hotels are still trying to play those games. Not sure the IRS would appreciate. However, I could give the hotel a lower score because of this kind of attitude but I won't because I want to separate the hotel experience from the behaviour of a hotel employee, but I guess I'll have to look elsewhere to find my go to hotel in Amsterdam.
