Beautiful old school hotel with a rich history, they even offer a 5pm art session where they go through some of the impressive art stuff in the hotel with the guests (in Japanese only). They have 3 public baths in the buildings where hotel guests can enjoy and 1 is on level 9 with panoramic view of the river and is open 24 hours! Amazing. Staff are all very friendly and some speak English very well! They have regular shuttles to the station although it is an easy 5mins walk to Gero Station. Would definitely stay again!

Best hotel in this trip! Lots of parking space, spacious room and very nice restaurants. We had beef dinner there, my son was enjoyed every minute and said it was his best experience of food. Onsen is nice but no free ice cream , which a little big down part, but totally alright. 5 minutes away is a local museum and bug museum, if you are there, worth a couple hours there.

Hotel location was perfect, just a few steps away from the Train & Bus Stations, and sheltered. Easy access to go anywhere by train or bus. Hotel has an onsen which is well maintained, clean and very comfortable to use. Would rate it 4* for its cleanliness. The water was not the best compared to the ones at Gero & Shirakawa-go but still very nice to be able to go to an Onsen in the comfort of the hotel itself. The buffet breakfast spread was very good and delicious and so was the dinner we booked for one night. The overall stay was ver pleasant.

A really comfortable hotel room in Takayama. The room is big and clean. The bed is really comfortable. It’s a short walk from Takayama Station and the old town making it a great location. The hotel is quite strict about the 3pm checkin (which I’m usually okay with). I stored my luggage and returned to the hotel later and there was quite a bit line of people waiting to checkin. For me, if the rooms are ready and the guests are a little bit early it doesn’t make sense to be so strict about the 3pm checkin. It creates inconvenience for the guests and a stressful time period for the staff. They moved as fast as they could but it could be improved. It’s disappointing to see another Japanese hotel enforce rules just for the sake of enforcing them rather than logically think about the situation. Also, when informed about the baths, I asked if I could use them with a tattoo and I got a vague answer which didn’t answer my question. I ended up using a public bath at a neighboring facility. I respect Japanese culture but it would be better if staff could give a clear answer rather than feel awkward about a tattoo question. It is 2025 after all. The hotel breakfast was decent but it’s extremely crowded with limited seating. I sat downstairs which was fine with me. Overall, I would recommend this hotel for a stay in Takayama but there is definitely room for improvement.

L'hotel dista cinque minuti a piedi dalla stazione degli autobus e sette-otto minuti a piedi dalla stazione ferroviaria. Il letto non era molto comodo e scricchiolava. L'ampio bagno dell'hotel era carino. L'acqua in bottiglia non era disponibile in camera; bisognava prenderla dal distributore d'acqua nel corridoio.

Sono previsti buffet per cena e colazione. Uso gratuito dell'executive lounge fino alle 22:00 con bevande self-service. Buoni servizi per le sorgenti termali, ma non è previsto il tradizionale yakata.

The hotel is conveniently located near Takayama Old Town, which made it easy for us to explore the area on foot. The buffet was great, though the selection stayed the same throughout our 3-day stay, it would’ve been nice to have more variety. The room was just enough for 2 adults and a toddler, not too spacious, but manageable. The staff were friendly and accommodating, which we really appreciated.

My stay at the Gero Onsen Yamagataya was a truly memorable experience. The views from the hotel were simply breathtaking. Whether it was from my room or the common areas, I was constantly treated to picturesque landscapes of the surrounding area. It added a special touch to my stay, creating a sense of tranquility and connection with nature. One of the unexpected highlights was the hotel's in-house souvenir shop. It was surprisingly well-stocked with high-quality local crafts and treats, making it incredibly convenient to find unique gifts for friends and family (and maybe a little something for myself!). The selection was impressive, and the prices were reasonable. Of course, no onsen hotel review would be complete without mentioning the onsen itself. The onsen at Yamagataya was fantastic. The various pools offered a range of temperatures and experiences, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. The serene atmosphere added to the overall sense of relaxation and rejuvenation. Overall, my stay at the Gero Onsen Yamagataya was exceptional. The combination of the stunning views, the convenient shopping, and the wonderful onsen experience made for a truly relaxing and enjoyable getaway. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone seeking a traditional Japanese onsen experience with a touch of modern comfort.
