Best spot from which to view the whole of San Francisco from a distance. Also the best place to stuffedly stagger after a visit to Ghirardelli Square and sit in peace while you digest your food. I recommend walking out along the pier and finding a nice bench to chill on while you take in the city as well as watch the crazy swimmers do laps in the bay.
I thought this was a great attraction of historic ships. It was free for me because I have an annual National Park pass, but it's only $6 otherwise. There are a number of different historic ships here, but there are also excellent views of San Francisco Bay, San Francisco city, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
It's free! The Maritime Visitor Center is a wonder museum if the maritime history if San Francisco. It's talks about the Gold Rush, Telegraph Hill, the ferry services in the area, even the different nationalities that made the city what it is today. There are interactive displays and videos that make it interesting. Plus, clean rest rooms.
I've lived in SF and the Bay Area for ages and never knew this was here. Great place to wander around and explore.
So many years of living in SF but I had never wandered down onto Hyde St pier. Shame on me! This outdoor living-and-breathing nautical historic park is all aces. You can clamber aboard old sailing ships from the 19th century, then learn about the salty sea-dog evolution of the city's Barbary Coast and the Gold Rush Days in the free NPS visitor center.
