If you’ve come this far, perhaps you’re willing to go a little further. Well, you’re looking at about an hour’s walk from the beginning of the Plateau to Little Italy. There’s a beautiful church and some nice greenspaces around the cross-street Rue Saint Zotique. Italian Week (as you know from my review in my “Literary Montreal” guide) is a big deal, of course. But the real draws for me are Milano Fruiterie (6862 St-Laurent), which is fabulous for produce, breads, olives, and cheese, and Café Italia (at number 6840), where “toast and coffee” is a sublime breakfast. This Montréal Italian neighborhood has been around since the nineteenth century, and the grocery stores and cafes have an old world feel to them. What better way to spend an afternoon than to knock back an espresso and take in a soccer match.
