Thousand Temples of Jogja 🏛️🏛️🏛️

Candi Sewu, located near Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta, offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient Javanese Buddhist architecture. Although located close to one another, this temple differs from Candi Prambanan in that Candi Sewu is a Buddhist temple whereas Candi Prambanan is a Hindu Temple. I explored this temple as part of my visit to the entire Prambanan Temple Complex. Candi Sewu apparently translates to "Thousand Temples" in Javanese but there aren’t a thousand temples here. Nonetheless, the over a hundred temples on display is still a magnificent sight and my camera just kept clicking as there were Instagram worthy photo compositions at every corner. The temples are decorated with intricate stone carvings and topped with ornate stupas. Rebuilding efforts are probably in progress as we saw wooden scaffolding around 1 of the smaller temples near the entrance. How grand it must be if all of the temples were successfully rebuilt! While not as famous as its neighbor, Prambanan, Candi Sewu holds its own charm and provides a serene escape from the crowds. When we were there, there were less than 10 visitors exploring this temple with us!
