Fushimi Inari Taisha and its Senbon Torii are a must-see, even in the high season

Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto is probably one of the most popular places which people visit on their first trip to Japan. To enjoy it in the sakura season, when Kyoto is bustling with tourists, you should go early in the morning, so you’re the first to climb the glorious Mount Inari. The trails that lead to the mountain peak through the beautiful orange gates (Senbon Torii) span about 4 kilometers. The hike is tough, especially in the hot weather, but it’s so worth it. Enjoy the breathtaking view from the crossroads and relax in the serene atmosphere of countless rock altars, covered in bright green moss. My personal favorite are the statues of kitsune, magical fox messengers of Kami Inari, which are found everywhere in this shrine.
