We booked at the last moment for Thursday 23 May to avoid travelling, for a long-booked weekend in Newquay, on the Bank Holiday Friday. We arrived around half past three. It took a little time to check in because, initially, they could not find the booking. Once checked in we asked where the bar/restaurant was so we could have a drink while reading the newspaper. We were told where it was but also that it didn’t open until five thirty. There was nothing to indicate this on the website. Fortunately, the package we had booked included a bottle of prosecco on arrival so we sat in the bar and eked it out for nearly two hours. We had booked a table in the restaurant for six o’clock so when the time came, we went to the completely empty restaurant and asked the female staff member who was in there where we should sit. She indicated anywhere. We chose a table near the window. She then came over and picked up a table paddle bearing the number 1 (the only one of the dozen tables to have one) and said that this table was for room 1. She went away and checked and came back to tell us it was ok to stay on that table. She brought us a menu each (on a clipboard) – we had to point out it was the breakfast menu. She didn’t believe us and tried for a few minutes to prise apart the solitary page. Eventually, the male staff member brought us one clipboard between us with the dinner menu. We asked for a wine list and he didn’t understand what we were asking for. By this time, we had realised their command of English was fairly minimal. The only way we could get a bottle of wine was to go behind the bar and point it out to them! The female staff member then came to take our order. She did not understand anything and we were sure that we wouldn’t get what we had ordered. Sure enough, having taken our order into the kitchen, the male staff member came back out and asked what sauce I wanted with my chicken breast. I pointed out that I hadn’t ordered chicken breast; I had ordered a half of herby roast chicken. I had tried to look at the menu on the website before travelling but there wasn’t one to be found. If you search for it, the search produces “Join us at Hustyns Resort Cornwall and immerse yourself in the flavours of Porthilly Shellfish as we celebrate the marriage between nature's bounty and culinary”. Try finding mussels on this very basic menu! The starters were OK although the side salad was fairly rudimentary. Between courses, the cutlery was not replenished. When the main meal came, my chicken was (a) not herby (b) the skin was flaccid and white so it seems highly unlikely this had been roasted (c) had clearly been warmed up and (d) was so dry it was unbelievable. I left the entire meal. At least our meal was not as bad as the only other table that was taken while we were in the restaurant. One of the ladies had ordered a vegan option and was served the meat option.
