Utente ospiteThe staff were friendly, polite, and generally helpful throughout our stay. The location is also a strong point, with plenty of restaurants and shopping malls nearby, and the Clan Jetties are within walking distance.
Unfortunately, the check-in experience left much to be desired.
Before arriving, I had emailed the hotel to enquire about an early check-in as we were travelling with elderly family members. I fully understood that this might not be possible due to the peak holiday season, which was perfectly reasonable.
Upon arriving around 11am, we were advised to return after 1pm. We came back shortly after 2pm but were informed that our rooms were still not ready. We were prepared to wait until the official check-in time of 3pm, but even then, the rooms were unavailable. We were repeatedly told ”10 more minutes”, only for those 10 minutes to become 30 minutes and then even longer. In the end, we did not receive our rooms until approximately 3:40pm.
What made the situation particularly frustrating was seeing guests who arrived after us being checked in ahead of us. The explanation given was that a supervisor needed to inspect the rooms before they could be released. While delays can happen, clearer communication and realistic timelines would have been far more appreciated than being repeatedly asked to wait another 10 minutes.
To make matters worse, one of our rooms had pillows and blankets with an unpleasant odour, which raised questions about the room readiness that had caused such a lengthy delay.
For guests driving, parking may be challenging as there are only a limited number of parallel parking spaces available. Even for those arriving by taxi or private hire, the drop-off and pick-up process can be somewhat inconvenient.
There is also a Heritage Fee payable upon check-in, which was acceptable and clearly communicated. Complimentary coffee and biscuits are available, and water dispensers are conveniently located near the lifts, although bottled water is not provided in the rooms.
The check-out process was also slightly unusual, as guests are required to wait for staff confirmation before leaving.
Overall, the stay was comfortable and the location was convenient. However, I value hotels that provide a smooth and efficient check-in experience. Delays are understandable, especially during busy periods, but guests deserve honest communication and accurate updates rather than repeated promises of ”10 more minutes.” With better management of the arrival experience, this would have been a much more enjoyable stay.

MikeLimMyBishop Hotel’s greatest selling point is its impeccable location on Lebuh Bishop, right in the heart of George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage core zone in George Town.
Within a 3–5 minute walk, you can reach landmarks such as St. George's Church, Pinang Peranakan Mansion, and the city’s famous Armenian Street mural trail.
The hotel is surrounded by some of Penang’s finest dining options. Step outside and you are immediately in Little India, where authentic banana-leaf rice and fragrant curries abound. Popular spots like GEMS Restaurant and the refined Nyonya restaurant Kebaya Dining Room are only a few steps away.
Despite its name, Bishop Hotel does not adopt a nostalgic Nanyang aesthetic. Instead, its interior design embraces a clean, modern industrial style.
Rooms are known for being tidy and efficiently designed. Flooring typically features wood or polished tiles. While room sizes are relatively compact—consistent with heritage district buildings—the facilities are generally well maintained and fairly new.
Given its location in the bustling old town, street-facing rooms may experience early-morning traffic noise or nearby commercial activity. Light sleepers are advised to book a windowless room (often quieter) or request a higher-floor, inward-facing unit.
At a price range of MYR 100–150 per night in the very heart of George Town, offering an elevator, private bathroom, and air conditioning, Bishop Hotel delivers outstanding value for money.
🪴Points to Consider🪴
Parking Challenges:
George Town’s old streets are narrow, and the hotel does not provide private parking. Guests arriving by car will need to rely on municipal street parking or nearby paid parking lots, which can be inconvenient.
Limited Natural Light:
Some budget room categories do not have exterior windows. In Southeast Asia’s humid climate, this may feel slightly confined to some guests.
Limited Facilities:
This is a hotel focused purely on accommodation. There is no swimming pool or large fitness center. For travelers seeking a resort-style “holiday atmosphere,” it functions more as a well-appointed base for exploration.
🪴Who It’s Best For🪴
Backpackers & Independent Travelers: Those who prioritize walking access to cultural landmarks.
Short-Term Business Travelers: Visitors seeking a modern, convenient, and reasonably priced stay in the city center.
Food Enthusiasts: Travelers who would rather spend their budget on Penang’s street art and culinary scene than on luxury lodging.
🪴Insider Tip🪴
On Sunday mornings, take a short walk to Occupy Beach Street, the weekly car-free event, to experience George Town’s most vibrant street culture and local market atmosphere.

Ray Mak Hon KitWe stayed two nights at Summer Tree Hotel Penang during our trip to Penang.
One of the main reasons I chose this hotel was its location — right in the heart of Georgetown near Komtar, which makes it very convenient for getting around. It also offers parking, which is a big plus in this area. Another reason was the late check-in option, as I was having dinner with a friend in Nibong Tebal, which is quite a distance away. The pricing was also reasonable, making it an attractive choice overall.
Upon arrival, however, parking was already full. I had to park at a space right in front of the hotel where delivery trucks usually arrive in the morning. This made me slightly anxious, as I was worried I might be asked to move my car early the next day.
The lobby is simple but modern, with a creative, slightly hipster and artistic vibe — almost like a small modern art space. There are vending machines offering snacks, drinks, and essentials for travelers. At the back, there are toilets and also a laundry area with washing machines. A small coffee corner and even an old-school arcade game machine add a nice nostalgic touch, which was a pleasant surprise.
However, the room itself was quite disappointing.
While the room is basic and small — which I don’t mind — the flooring under the carpet felt severely damaged. Walking on it felt uneven and almost “soft,” as if the ground beneath had deteriorated. It gave a very uncomfortable and unsettling feeling, possibly due to moisture or termite damage underneath.
Another concern was the bathroom design. There is an elevated step at the entrance, which becomes a clear trip hazard. I actually tripped once when entering. Even after that, I had to be very cautious because the floor just outside the bathroom is extremely slippery. Every entry and exit required full attention.
There is also no proper shelf or platform inside the shower area to place shampoo or shower gel. We had to repeatedly open and close the glass door just to access toiletries during showering, which was inconvenient. Only basic amenities like shower gel and liquid hand soap were provided.
The room was also advertised with a decent view, but the window was covered with a mesh, and since we were on the first floor, there was very little to see.
On the positive side, the water dispenser outside the room was very convenient.
The next day, parking was still full, so we had to park at a private area nearby. Since it was raining, the walk back to the hotel was quite inconvenient as well.
Overall, while the location and concept of the hotel are strong, the room condition and safety design issues need serious attention. I would strongly recommend replacing the carpet flooring with vinyl wood flooring for durability and hygiene. As for the bathroom layout, improvements may be limited due to structure, but safety enhancements like anti-slip flooring would make a big difference.

If you’re looking for a modern, well-located stay in George Town, Beacon Executive Suites is a popular choice that balances luxury with practical apartment-style living.
Here is a general review based on typical guest experiences as of late 2025:
Beacon Executive Suites Penang: Review
The Highlight: The Rooftop Sky Podium
The standout feature of this property is the rooftop infinity pool. Located on the highest floor, it offers a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of the Penang skyline, including a clear view of Komtar. It is arguably one of the best spots in the city for sunrise or a late-night dip, as the pool is often heated or kept at a comfortable temperature.
Accommodations & Comfort
The suites are designed as ”Executive” units, meaning they feel more like a high-end condo than a standard hotel room.
• Space: Most units feature high ceilings, which give the apartments a bright, airy, and ”cooling” feel.
• Amenities: Units typically come with a fully equipped kitchenette, a washing machine, and high-speed Wi-Fi, making it excellent for families or digital nomads staying for more than a few days.
• Cleanliness: Generally rated very high (often scoring 9.0+ on booking platforms). Guests frequently mention the ”sparkling clean” condition of the rooms upon check-in.
Location & Accessibility
Situated on Jalan Sungai Pinang, the location is strategic:
• Foodie Heaven: You are within a 5-minute drive of famous food spots like the Padang Brown food court and various local cafes.
• Sightseeing: Most major George Town attractions (Armenian Street, Chew Jetty, and Komtar) are just a 7–10 minute Grab ride away.
• Convenience: There is a minimarket on-site and several 24-hour convenience stores within walking distance.
Things to Consider
• Self-Check-In: Like many executive suites in Penang, this is often managed by third-party hosts rather than a traditional hotel front desk. Communication is usually done via WhatsApp or messaging apps.
• Parking: While free parking is provided, the multi-level parking garage requires driving up several floors, which can be a bit tedious if you are in a rush.
• Security: Security is strict, which is great for safety, but make sure to keep your access card with you at all times to avoid being locked out of common areas.
Final Verdict
Best for: Families, groups of friends, and business travelers who want more space and better facilities than a hotel room can offer.
Rating: 4.5 / 5
It offers incredible value for money, especially for the quality of the rooftop facilities and the modern interior of the suites.
