The Lalit Great Eastern Kolkata

Kolkata|1.25km dal Anthropological Survey Of India
I shall start from arrival at the hotel. We were a family of four who had booked two rooms at the property. We arrived around 14:30 Hrs (at least 30 mins after the designated check-in time). First of all, although the check-in desk at the hotel is quite huge, there were only 3 staff members ***ning the desk, all of them occupied. We had to wait for around 15 mins, looking here and there like *****s with our bags on before someone greeted us. And I do not mind waiting for check-in; what I do mind is that despite multiple staff members seeing us wait, not one of them acknowledge our presence and asked us to take a seat and wait. They would all look at us and carry on. Forget a warm smile, forget a namaste, we were made to feel like fools just standing there without anyone attending to us. When we finally did get a chance to check in, we were given two adjacent rooms. The key to one room was handed over to us, and we were told that the second room is not ready yet and that as soon as it is ready the key would be sent to us in our room. We said okay and moved towards our room. Once in our room, all four of us sat waiting in one room for around 45 mins for the key to the second room. We were not able to unpack because we wanted to unpack in our respective rooms. Tired and hungry, we left the hotel to get ourselves some lunch and some sightseeing, hoping that by the time we return our second room would be ready. When we returned and asked for the key to the second room from the reception desk, we were told that the room that was allocated to us had been now given to someone else -- and we were given some other room that was ”close” to the first room. I understand that asking for adjacent rooms is a mere request and not a right. But had we been given a ”close” room earlier, we could have gotten the keys earlier at the time of check-in! We waited for a room for so long, only for it to be given to someone else. Fast forward to the next morning's breakfast. The spread was quite good and quite diverse in variety. However, again the entire staff at the breakfast looked tense for some reason. And they kept messing up with live counter orders. No one had a smile on, no one welcomed you with warmth, and no one made you feel as if you were staying in a 5-star hotel (which The Lalit considers itself to be). Our entire experience with The Lalit was below par at the very least. It was not the kind of experience you would expect from a branded property that so conveniently calls itself a luxury 5-star property. I honestly feel for the money that I paid, I could and should have gotten a different property and that would have been definitely better. For the foreseeable future, and till things change, I do not see myself staying at any Lalit property.

Hotel Hindusthan International, Kolkata

Kolkata|1.77km dal Anthropological Survey Of India
I went on a business trip to Kolkata from Mauritius and stayed in this hotel for 10 days. The location of the hotel is a huge advantage as all related facilities are just walking distance, as well as the metro station, moreover the Park Street is few kms away which is a great spot for nightlife *******. The hotel in general was quite hygienic and I highly appreciated the customer service provided by the room attendants during my stay, they were very attentive to my needs and requests. Restaurant service is more than satisfactory and staffs are very friendly, helpful as well as caring. I visited the pub and night club too during my stay to experience the ambiance and I must say service was good too, barmen were very attentive to requests, prices of drinks are on the high end though. Front desk staffs were quite cold and seemed to be always stressed out at the reception desk. Bellboys and door lady always smiling and ready to assist. Food in the main restaurant is more or less the same day in day out, lack of international cuisines and options were observed, breakfast selection mainly focuses on Indian options, thus I ended having only black coffee and omelets almost everyday. The swimming pool was not available unfortunately during my stay and the depth of the pool is quite scary. I stayed in room 627 which had a nice view on the city, quite spacious and comfortable, except for the mattress which was completely deformed and I spent night tossing and turning around in my bed. In a nutshell I shall summarize in saying that my stay was good, the hotel is located in a prime area and I loved my stay. It is a good value for money establishment. Thank you team for making my stay enjoyable.

I read a number of critical reviews before we booked The Fairlawn, so it was with some trepidation that we arrived for a five night stay. I am pleased to report that our anxieties were ill-founded, as our experience in this hotel was excellent. We did get stomach problems, but that was not from their good restaurant at The Fairlawn - we finally identified it being from eating pastries at Starbucks in Bengaluru airport. Good rule - steer clear of all pastries while travelling in India! It's not the first time we've been laid low by pastries... one would think we'd learnt that lesson. The room we had was great. It was upstairs, and looked out on the side street below. The bed was extremely comfortable, and even the TV had reasonable options for English-speaking audiences. There is a fabulous sit-out on the upper floor, where you can catch up on reading or online work. And the breakfasts are a welcome spread with enough to satisfy all tastes. While we were there, we saw ***y foreigners and Indians alike enjoying their stay - they are often full-booked, so that speaks for itself. Also, they had a rolling maintenance program in place, which is what a heritage hotel requires, so that indicates they are not allowing everything to disintegrate uncared-for. I must praise the staff. The reception especially was always responsive to all our requests, and service and restaurant staff couldn't do enough for us. Unfortunately, since 'Diamond' Oberoi (how embarrassing to have such a nickname!) died, they have not yet been able to reattain their liquor license, though it is hoped to be soon. But there is a wine and beer shop just down the road, so that's not a problem. We felt the restaurant was very good, and certainly it is well patronaged by the elite locals, so that is a commendation. Certainly, it is good food, although I personally feel the prices don't quite match the quality level. Nonetheless, you won't be disappointed. If there is any down-side, it is related to Sudder Street, not The Fairlawn! We last stayed in Sudder Street nearly twenty years ago. If you want to taste the Calcutta of Geoffrey Morehouse et al, then by all means, reside there for a span. Twenty years ago we were twenty years younger, and more eager to mick with the crowd of degradation-renown - 'the Real India'. But now, firstly there is no such thing as 'the Real India', and secondly, ro***ticising grubbiness in the midst of traffic has reached its used-by-date. Twenty years ago, at least the traffic was minimal in this whole area, although the crowds in New Market are the same as ever even if the touts are now unbearable, but traffic in Kolkata is the same as traffic in all major cities across the world (except Singapore). Really, what's the point in visiting any city? They are all the same! I suggest you certainly experience The Fairlawn, as it's heritage style is delightful, but otherwise, stay closed to Park Street, or whatever they call it now.
