Warning: Sahara Motel Is Unsafe for Recovery and Respectful Stay I stayed at Sahara Motel in December 2024 in an upstairs unit. While the room was clean, it was extremely noisy—thin walls, constant disturbances, and no insulation from surrounding units. But the real issue was the aggressive, bullying behaviour from the owners. The male owner reprimanded me for “making noise,” then escalated by shouting through my door and threatening eviction. His conduct was hostile and intimidating. When I requested a refund, his wife—visibly submissive and equally dismissive—refused outright. Their treatment was unprofessional, aggressive, and deeply unsettling. Every unit I saw was designated for smoking. I witnessed recovering hospital patients staying there, visibly exposed to secondhand smoke. The owners showed no concern—only a willingness to profit from vulnerable guests in unsafe conditions. This is not a safe or respectful place to stay. If you're recovering from illness, travelling with children, or simply expecting basic dignity, avoid Sahara Motel. The owners are bullies, the environment is toxic, and the health risks are real.

This was so close to all the University Graduation events for our daughter. We appreciated not having to worry about parking and walked to all the events.

The area was good and close to town

This is an excellent guest home. It is immaculately clean, which is terrific. There are several room options. Some exceedingly spartan, just a bed and a sink. Some have their own shower and toilet. Breakfast is cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, and several types of bread. Also, cupcakes and juice. Nothing hot, but perfectly adequate. They have a laundry room, with 2 washers and 2 dryers. The hotel is very well-managed. There is very limited seating in the breakfast room, so that can be an issue. Check out time is 10 AM. The property is a 15-20 minute walk to everything - the town center, supermarkets, the splendid botanical gardens, etc. If i were to return to Dunedin I would stay here.
