This was the best hotel experience I've had in a long time, the service and staff were incredible very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful we will be back to experience the rest of the amenities that the hotel has to offer,we had a full schedule to achieve and had limited time to get the full experience .

Three generations of my family — my mother, daughter and I — spent 27 hours at the Umstead for a luxurious retreat that was a delight for all five senses. “This is our Paris!” we told the staff, who were always attentive without ever intruding. From the pool cabana to the spa to the terrace bar to our room with lovely turndown service, the Umstead gave us memories to cherish and a sense of relaxation that has stayed with us for days. Every bite, every sip, every moment, every expert touch, every view—trés magnifique!

Arrived at 3 pm and have been told that room was not ready. I decided to leave luggage and join the pool while waiting. At 4:40 pm I received message that room is ready. This is absolutely not acceptable for the reputation of this hotel. When booked the room 2-3 weeks in advance I was interested in booking a Spa. Previously, I have been told that Spa is prioritized for hotel guests. When asked for the treatment availability, there was one 30 min targeted massage available and nothing else. That was surprising to hear. Visiting Umstead Spa previously, I experienced on multiple occasions 50 minutes massage for advertised 60 minutes treatment. They required you to be ready 15 min prior to your appointment and then showed past your start of the appointment time. It is worth money visiting Spa, however advertisement and their policy should be updated to clearly state the time of the actual treatment.

This is a five star hotel, with a five star restaurant, excellent operating staff and likely the worst executive management of any where I have stayed. We arrived at 3:29 for our 3pm check in and were informed the room we “reserved” would have guests till 4pm. Once they left we would need to give house keeping time to turn the room over. I inquired if this was an error and told no, this is hotel policy for Amex holders. I asked for another room as my wife and young children had been driving 8 hours and left early to let the kids have pool time. They said no rooms available. Mistakes happen. But this was not an error but company policy to rent a room to two guests at the same time. I feel horrible for the floor managers who also expressed their displeasure in the Umstead practice of charging multiple guests for the same room at the same time. If you are an owner or executive of the umstead you should be embarrassed. Amex doesn’t own the hotel, this was your choice.

This is truly a 5 star hotel with all the amenities you would expect to go along with that designation. Service was amazing and incredibly professional. My husband and I went for our anniversary and were given a substantial room upgrade which made our stay even better. We had breakfast at Heron's restaurant and it too was absolutely magnificent. We stay at a lot of hotels and can truly say this is one of the nicest, classiest hotels we have ever stayed in. I cannot come up with a single negative about our experience which is unheard of these days.

I travel for business and am constantly in and out of hotels. I judge everything from the moment I arrive to the moment I leave. Hands down, I can say that the Umsted may be one of the best hotels in America. The professionalism of the staff, the rooms, amenities, turndown service, and the dining options are simply the best! The walking path around the lake, the pool (in summer), and the workout room top off the stay with perfection. I have stayed at the Umsted over the last 5-6 years, and nothing has ever been out of place. And families, you'll be as welcome as I am as a business traveler.

I had a wonderful solo getaway at the Umstead in July, 2024. I highly recommend staying on the ground (spa) level if you can because you have a serene outdoor porch that is shaded from the hot direct sun. The landscaping is beautiful and you feel very secluded amongst the trees and wildlife. The hotel is also very quiet. I could go on and on about the luxurious spa, but just book it. Everyone I met was very friendly and accommodating. The hotel is pricy, but it's well worth the money. The food is excellent (I had room service,) and many details are well thought-out, such as the water and ice machine in the hallway (LOVE) as well as the sheets, iPad in the rooms, bath products and the structure of the shower. It was a required respite for me, and I left feeling rejuvenated and calm. You will not be disappointed. A+

The property is quite lovely. There is a nice path around a pond to walk. The pool area we used for a brief bit for relaxing. The room was clean, bedding comfortable, quiet hallways. We didn't eat at either of the restaurants. The bar and lounge was the open dining option for the night we stayed. I wasn't in the mood for fancy, so this wasn't a problem. Plenty of nearby restaurants. Hotels and resorts have a vibe, and it was just off for me. I'm sure others would be perfectly comfortable and would be able to appreciate it.
