El Portal Motel

First, we need to talk about Mittens, the motel mascot. She greeted us when we got in after dinner, and then when I walked outside in the morning, she came in and hung out with us. We're cat people, so it was great! The place we usually stay here in town was full, so we stayed here and weren't dissatisfied. It's an older motel and shows its age in a couple of areas (they actually use keys!), but it is clean, comfortable, and quiet. The king bed was comfortable, but only had two pillows, so if you're pillow people, bring extras! The AC/heater is quiet and very effective. There is a fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. The shower works well, and the water heats quickly, and the towels are nice and soft. I would only suggest some weather*****ping for the door and soap holders in the shower. Some reviews complained about its worn appearance, but it didn't bother us. It ain't the Ritz, but the price was nice. I'd rather stay here than at the Motel 6! It's also past the 95 intersection, so there are no trucks, and few cars passing by. I like the convenience of the hotel/****** where we usually stay, but we'll probably stay here again next time we come.

Very dated rooms, ok, but the main complaint, as other have said, I was charged twice. I went back to the office and told him this. He said it was only once. I showed him my statement from banking app showing 2 payments Was told one would be returned. Still waiting. Beware.

I stayed in the old building built originally as a garage in 1939. It was remodeled in 1950 to have guest rooms. It is built of plywood rather than drywall since drywall was too heavy and fragile to make the trip to this remote location. The room was quirky but adequate and was an example of what touring was like for our grandparents. There is no electric outlet in the bathroom: there were no ground fault interrupters. There are a couple of windows that open and allow the cool air in. I was impressed by the upgrade to heat pump systems for each room for heating and cooling. These are quiet, powerful, and energy efficient. It requires a little patience to figure out the functions on the remote. The unit responds slowly, so it's easy to think it is not working.

The motel was nothing special. They didn't have shampoo etc and when asked about it they said they hadn't been to the store in awhile. Stayed there because going to Death Valley. There is nothing to do in the town. Very few restaurants nearby and they close early. It was funny that the area almost had no fresh fruit to eat.

Needed a place to stop after a long drive… called and booked while we were about an hour away. Super friendly guy booked us, and since it was going to be late, he out our key in the room and turned on the heat so it was toasty when we got there. We slept great, cozy beds, clean room, hot showers. Couldn’t be happier. Sorry I didn’t get the guys name, but THANK YOU for the good night sleep!

The El Portal Motel in Beatty is a great place to stay when visiting nearby Death Valley National Park, the eastern entrance only being about 10 miles away. Quite a few travelers appear to make this their base either going to or coming from Death Valley. The El Portal is your old school mom and pop motel likely dating back to the 1960s or early 1970s. It's a relatively small establishment having maybe 20 - 25 rooms. My wife and I stayed here for one night in August 2023 while on vacation and on our way to visit Death Valley National Park the next day. It's a very well-kept motel. It has a swimming pool in the back and an awesome old-style motel sign out front that is lit up after dark. Great for some excellent photos. The experience here harkens back to the classic days of road travel across the desert back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. The rooms are retro, but spacious and well kept. The facilities (shower, sink, toilet) were all in good shape and functioned well. The air conditioner kept the room nice and cool all night long. Check-in was easy and friendly. The price was also reasonable for this little town being the gateway to Death Valley. Oh, and there is a nice little motel kitty named Mittens you'll likely meet when either checking in at the front office or somewhere around the property during your stay. She is really sweet and enjoys being petted. Beatty also features a number of stray burros that roam the streets, some of which are friendly. For eats, Beatty has a Subway, Denny's and a couple of other local dining establishments. All in all, a good stopover through the barren desert of southeast Nevada. Nothing fancy - just good, simple and clean accommodations that won't break the bank. We would certainly stay here again should we find ourselves in this area in the future.

Pro's: price and location. Large refrigerator in the room with a freezer compar**ent. Neg's:hygiene, shower curtain was filthy, at the bottom a yellow-brown edge, it was in urgent need of replacement. Shower head also filthy, full of limescale and dirt.

We stayed here for a night on our cross country road trip. It's quite dated, but clean and comfortable. We were headed to Death Valley and it was close-by and convenient. No breakfast was offered, but there was a nice outdoor pool on the property.

As as value for money option in a small town El Portal is perfect for a one night stay enroute to Death Valley. Yes it is a dated property but it was clean and comfortable with good airconditioning which was much appreciated at this hot time of year and had everything we needed.
