Hotel Traube Tonbach

Could resist another visit, a few previous ones too. Unbelievable consistency weather summer or winter. We were recognised and greeted by staff we met before. Attentive yet laid back service and staff, as always. We chose the Schatzhauser for dinner, naturally very good indeed. We like the variety there, my wife had a version of coc au vin, cooked to perfection, whilst I had the sour and spicy papaya salad with loin of beef, fantastic. We were also treated by the owner again, such a nice touch. We have booked again for next summer already!

A group of four of us spent two nights. Substandard service at the restaurant. Second night, two of us fell ill. Checkout there was a debacle with the bill that took an hour for them to sort. The transfer we requested to the airport didn’t show up. They called a taxi. Taxi too small. They agreed to send us in their complimentary shuttle. Driver missed 3 seperate exits. We narrowly boarded. And now the hotel has taken the liberty of charging the card on file for the ride they gave us in hotel shuttle. Visit this establishment if you wish.

This is a double review, we first went June 22 and so enjoyed it we returned June 23, so here goes! First visit was of note due to a very small error that held us from checking in for 30 minutes, reception staff came to apologise then all was sorted. However, not the end of the story, we had a nock on the door and the person concerned apologies in person, I said "hey, small mistake and thanks for the honesty and courtesy" OK we thought. Another nock on the door, this time the guest relations manager, could not have been more kind, bringing with him a trolley of ice and champagne on the house and a small gateaux for my wife's birthday!! Wow how professional. Always a cliche, but it's how you resolve an issue, however small, that shows professionalism. Top marks! Many thanks to all the staff. So we return in June this year, utterly flawless and although we never mentioned it, they remembered my wife's birthday from 2022 with many greeting and another cake, very touching. The restaurant (3*) Stunning on both occasions. The service, sommelier and front of house, coordination are flawless, a lesson to anyone that wants to experience perfect service, attentive, but not over the top, even the look of the staff and restaurant style are perfect. You only needed to look up and someone one is with you. Food. OK I am a really good home chef and know what I'm doing, BUT, the dishes here blew us a way. Fantastic achievement, inventive , interesting. Sauces in particular were divine. We had one comment though, the portions are generous for Michelin standard, the first time we had the large discovery menu, but on our return had the À la carte, that suited us better, there is a smaller set menu as well. Don't take this as criticism, it's just a generous menu. 2 Staff in the hotel and 2 in the restaurant recognised us from a June 22, a very warm greeting. On leaving, someone came out to give us bottled water as we left. Utter class. So overall, warm, unpretentious and laid back venue. We will be back in 24! We only spend one night and weren’t very lucky with the weather - so we did not have the chance to explore the beautiful nature surrounding the hotel. So I can not comment on that, but the hotel itself is very comfortable and quite luxurious - all that in a very cozy traditional yet modern Black Forest-style. We loved the spa area with the great pool, the well appointed gym and the overall look of everything. The staff too is friendly and competent. I wasn’t so fond of our room, which was a standard, because it was very long and narrow, making it a bit dark and difficult to navigate with two people and luggage. It felt cramped. Next time we will go for a better category for sure. I was also a little bit annoyed when we arrived at breakfast and had to wait for quite some time to be seated, especially because we were send to tables that were already occupied by a waitress at first. The breakfast though is one of the best I ever had. All the traditional German fare is of a much higher quality then usual. The liver sausage for example was incredible. Just a joy. We also liked the other guests and had some very good conversations. Check out can get busy and while it is overall quite fast I did not like to be in such a crowd of guests (the pandemic isn’t over yet). Again the staff though is doing their best to do everything fast. There is a concierge from Thuringia who I enjoyed chatting with while waiting for my car to be loaded up and ready to go. So many nice people! My conclusion - overall a very nice place to stay. The Traube Tonbach is well worth the visit.
