Driving through the SE US
never saw a pheasant, SD, Iowa, Missouri .I was a grad student in SDSU in the late 1990's. Loved to hunt the grasslands with our dogs for all birds.

Not really a grassland
We drove through and found the "grassland" to be heavily farmed. Hay, sorgum, corn and cows. No actual native grasslands and not a lot of wildlife

Great for birding and night photography
The backroads in this area provide ample opportunities for birding by car. The lack of light pollution also makes it a great spot for star / moon photography.
