We stepped through the gates of Sovereign Hill and the modern world fell away. Horses clip-clopped down Main Street, costumed characters tipped their hats, and the smell of boiling lollies drifted from the confectionery shop.At the Diggings we knelt by the creek with metal pans, swirling the black sand until a tiny flash of real gold appeared. We laughed out loud — it was ours. Later we watched molten gold pour into a gleaming bar, then rode underground into the cool tunnels of the Red Hill Mine, standing where the famous Welcome Nugget was once found. We tasted warm raspberry drops, dipped our own candles, rode a horse-drawn coach, and watched redcoat soldiers drill. Everywhere the 1850s town felt alive. As the sun set we walked back with a small jar of gold dust in our pockets and quiet contentment in our hearts. Sovereign Hill didn’t just show us the gold rush — for one perfect day, it let us live it.
