We returned home yesterday after a fantastic week’s holiday at the Romantik hotel. The atmosphere from arrival onwards was just what we hoped it would be, with that homely feeling that you get from a family run hotel with such a long history. We loved the quirky decor touches in the lounge/bar area! We stayed in one of the Pinzgauer suites (614) and had a view overlooking the restaurant terrace, part of the garden and over roofs to the mountains beyond. It was a very spacious and modern room but also felt nicely Austrian with wood and traditional style textiles. The bed was a typical Austrian double/twin and very comfortable; the wardrobe had plenty of space for a week’s clothes for two and had a safe. The lounge area included a sofa and also a large bath! There was a kettle and a fridge, great for a British cuppa. The balcony had two comfortable reclining chairs and a table as well as a private sauna! The bathroom is very modern with an excellent large shower area and separate toilet. We were staying half board. Breakfasts are buffet style for everything, with eggs/omelettes made at a cooking station plus other hot choices as well as plenty of cold options, fruit, different breads, pastries, a cake of the day, cereal etc. There were various juices, teas and coffees. There was a basket with several gluten free options kept separate from the breads as well as soya milk and almond milk plus soya desserts. Dinners were a mixture of help yourself and waiter service most days, with a salad buffet, choice of soup to help yourself and sometimes a buffet dessert of the day too (eg ice cream day, pancake day, strudel day). Main courses usually had three choices: regional (meat), vegetarian or fish. One day was gala dinner night, which was all served, and included some interesting options which turned out to be very nice! There is free cake available at 4pm every day, usually two choices but sometimes more! You pay for drinks if you want them. Every member of staff we met was friendly and helpful, from the servers in the restaurant area to the reception team and indeed the owners who were visible helping and working when needed. They were happy to stop and chat and most spoke very good English. The hotel is in a perfect location only a few minutes’ walk from the esplanade and boat trips, town square and bus station as well as the cityXpress cable car base station. The train station is also only about 10 minutes walk away. We found our room to be very quiet even with the windows all open. Finally, I must mention the amazing Summer Card provided by the hotel, which gives you free access to cable cars, public transport, boat trips and various activities locally in Zell am See and Kaprun (we also went as far as Krimml waterfalls on the bus for free, getting a discount on admission too) as well as discounts on other things. In low season (we visited in late May) this is unlimited and we reckon we saved about €250 each over the course of the week! We would hi
