On arriving, initial impressions were positive, and parking bays for the disabled were available just outside the entrance. This changed dramatically when we entered. We found the receptionist on duty when we arrived intimidating, surly and unwelcoming. It felt like a confrontation with a ********. Though there were things we needed to raise with him during our stay we felt obliged to avoid him because he made us feel unsafe. Staff on duty the next morning were a substantial improvement and these comments do not apply to them. The restaurant/pub attached was more pleasant, the staff helpful and the food good value. Physically the Hotel seemed old, shabby and in need of refurbishment. Though otherwise OK, our bathroom for the disabled featured a bath, not a walk-in shower and hence this could not be used at all. The corridors and doors are too narrow for wheelchair users and the doors can only be opened by an able-bodied carer or friend, thus it was impossible for the disabled to move about independently and unaided. The disabled or retired should avoid this hotel. Better value and service are available elsewhere.
