Calamander Unawatuna Beach

There’s a good reason why there have been no reviews of this property since October 2020: it’s closed down! As a regular guest in the days before UBR was sold and ruined, I feel outraged thinking about what happened to this wonderful property. I went to take a look today and the gate is barred with a notice saying “closed until further notice”… and the paintwork is peeling off the walls. If you go back 15 years when UBR was in its heyday you’d have found a well-run property with fantastic staff and world-class views over beautiful Unawatuna bay. After it was sold a bit of maintenance is all that was needed but the new owners decided to change everything, even turning the pools from blue to rust-orange (and trebling the room rates of course). I wasn’t surprised to hear that the new UBR had shut its doors but I remain sad and annoyed thinking of all the times over the years that I would have continued to stay here if not for all the misconceived and arrogant changes made by the new management. UBR remains a stark example of why people with MBAs are not nearly as clever as they think they are.
