Mercure Townsville

The Mercure Townsville is a very comfortable hotel. The rooms are exactly what you'd expect at Mercure, comfy beds, all the necessities. The service is impeccable, and the food is to die for. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay... for the most part. The one downside for us, was the fact that at all hours of the day, sun up to sunset, the manager in place at this hotel deems it acceptable to run Sky News on every TV set around the bar and restaurant. Politics in public spaces is never a good idea. Extreme political bias in public spaces, is downright uncomfortable. Every night we sat there at dinner whilst the typical Sky News opinion piece headlines flashed all over the multiple TV screens throughout what is supposed to be a relaxing space. These headlines were loaded with such extreme (and I would go so far as to say hateful) political bias, that I do not even feel comfortable writing them here, or attaching pictures, for fear that my review may get rejected for the use of the words contained in them. Regardless of your own political standings, I’m sure that the vast majority of reasonable people can agree with me when I say that it is never appropriate to broadcast such a politically charged news station in what is supposed to be an all-inclusive, welcoming space. And let’s not conflate fact as opinion here, it IS an extremely biased, politically charged station, who’s owner is the subject of a royal commission campaign, and who has only very recently been taken to court in the U.S and forced to concede that his media empire knowingly lies. I’m not sure what management is trying to achieve by the all day broadcast of such a controversial station, but it has most definitely resulted in the loss of my own, and my family’s business. Very disappointing, as we otherwise would have been regulars. This has nothing to do with being a “left wing snowflake”. It has nothing to do with being “woke”. This has to do with wanting to go away on holiday and leave politics at home where it belongs. Now, to be fair, we did approach the manager about this situation before coming to the decision that we will not return. The response was entirely unacceptable and in our view, unprofessional. He told us that he did change the station after our last visit, but that the regulars at the hotel asked for it to be turned back onto Sky News, and so he did. So on our next visit to the hotel, there it was again. We approached the manager again regarding this, and his response to us was that “he can’t win”. He then told us that he will make a note to ensure the channel is changed when we visit. We found this utterly demeaning, condescending and, to be frank, insulting. He doubled down on the previous reasoning that the regulars ask for Sky News because, in his own words, “It is the most informative”. Sir, there is nothing informative about the headlines we witnessed on this station during our multiple visits. It is not news, it is political “discussion” loaded with extreme bias
Banjo Paterson Motor Inn

Stayed two night at this motel. The motel was a clean and tidy. The bed was comfortable. The room was self contained with a kitchenette. Even though it is on a main road there was no noise either from the road or the guest at the hotel. Breakfast was ordered when we arrived and a continental breakfast was delivered each afternoon to the room which was great as we had a 6.00am flight on the last morning and was able to have breakfast before leaving. We frequently visit family in Townville and stay at a different location but in future we will be staying at Banjo Paterson Motor Inn.

We stayed for 2 nights in room 19. It was in the second row from the road and had no road noise. The shower was good. We had our own wifi so can’t comment on the wifi on offer. Netflix was included. The fridge has a little freezer. The unit had tea/ coffee 2 bowls and 2 plates. It was close to a pub across the road, 5 min walk. The bed was comfy and the ac worked well. There were a number of other travellers here and families as well. I think the pool has been filled in but the bbq area is still there although We didn’t use it. Checkin was easy.

Absolutely appalled. We booked our apartment months ago. MONTHS. We booked through Wotif and specifically selected a 3 bedroom apartment with 2 queen beds and 2 single beds. NOWHERE on the booking page or in any fine print did it mention the bedding configuration may be different. The day before arrival I received a text message asking me to confirm my name and my bedding “request”. I immediately replied with my name, and made a point of specifying “Bedding REQUIRED: 2 queen 2 single, this is what we booked”. So let’s jump forward to check-in day. First of all, finding this place is not easy. No signs out front to let you know where to turn in, and if you miss the turn in there’s no easy way to turn around and get back to it. Ended up driving around for 10 minutes just trying to get in there to where we thought it might be. When we finally found the place, check-in was a long process with a staff member who was behaving quite unprofessionally and whilst I wouldn’t go so far as to say they made me feel uncomfortable, I can absolutely see how other guests may feel that way. After all the mucking around we were then hit with a $150 deposit on credit card. Absolutely absurd in this day and age. These ridiculous, out-dated policies are deal breakers for people travelling on a budget, which we are, so you can be sure we will not be coming back here purely based on this alone. (Hot tip for others who feel the same way: Rydges nearby will hold only $1 on your card, and Madison Plaza also very close doesn’t hold anything at all. I’m sure there’s plenty of others around too that aren’t stuck in the dark ages). Moving on. IF ONLY those were the sole issues! No such luck. So, we finally get to the apartment, and wouldn’t you know it, the bedding is wrong. Despite booking months in advance, and clarifying very clearly what bedding was required the day before, they still managed to mess it up. 3 queen beds. We are multi-generational family so obviously cannot share beds. After multiple phone calls to reception requesting a trundle bed, being told that they would normally charge for this (and promptly explaining to them that there is no way in h*** we would be paying due to this being THEIR stuff up!!!) and having the staff member mentioned earlier carrying on like an eccentric character on a soap opera telling us that we’re gonna have to come down and help carry it because it’s way too heavy for them, we told them to forget it. The end result was that our youngest (not SO young at 19 years of age) ended up having to sleep on the couch!!! We made it very clear to them that we would be requesting at least a partial refund, to which they replied “we’ll see what we can do”. Once we finally got past the bedding issue, more and more problems started popping up. Firstly, out of 3 bedrooms in this apartment, two had lamps, and only ONE of those lamps had a light bulb in it. So one working lamp in the entire apartment. Another call to reception only to be told that
