Holiday Inn Budapest - BUDAÖRS

Budaors
This is the second time we stayed at this hotel. First time worked out well and we decided to stay Saturday night for a weekend in Budapest. Sunday morning, getting dressed and ready to go down to breakfast, my 5 year old daughter turns to me and says “daddy what is this?”. SHE WAS HOLDING A USED SYRINGE IN HER HAND. At first I just took it away from her and as we were on our way to breakfast I took it to the front desk. Timea at the front desk asked if it was mine, I said no, found it in the room and don’t know what to do with it so I brought it to you. Then we went to breakfast. At breakfast, I was thinking about it more and searching the internet and found some horror stories people getting stabbed by needles in hotel rooms, having to get tested for HIV and other diseases. Luckily none of us were jabbed otherwise we would spend Sunday at the hospital emergency room getting tested for bloodborne diseases and hoping for a negative result. Thank god my daughter didn’t end up playing with it and showed it to me first. I got very concerned so I left my family at breakfast and went back to the front desk to ask them if they still had it and whether it looked like it was used, trying to find out more about it. Timea at the front desk nonchalantly told me that it wasn’t an issue, it was just an insulin syringe and she threw it out in the trash bin. I don’t know how you can tell what it was used for or whether it was used or not, but this kind of response seemed a little ignorant. I ended up talking to the hotel manager Melinda, who of course apologized and it seemed like she understood the gravity of the situation, so I accepted the apology and told her we’re just going to finish breakfast and quickly go back to the room to take out stuff and check out a little earlier. We didn’t want to spend any more time in the room than we needed to. And that is what we did. At checkout, Timea didn’t seem to be that concerned about the gravity of the situation either, not sure if Melinda the manager spoke with her or not. I already paid for the room in full but she saw that the parking ticket was not paid, and she said that she will validate my parking ticket for free so I don’t have to pay for parking given what we’ve just been through. Melinda told me she or her manager would reach out to me on Monday. I did get an email on Monday but it was fairly generic reiterating how the IHG clean policy is important to them etc. I ended up calling this in to IHG Diamond support line and filing a complaint. Hopefully it’s taken seriously. From my point of view this was absolutely unacceptable. Not only that the room was not properly cleaned and housekeeping missed a syringe, front desk completely ignored the risks and didn’t even ask if anyone got hurt, and compensating us by validating our parking ticket after dragging us through this experience seemed like a big joke.
