Amberley Castle- A Relais & Chateaux Hotel

This is our 8th year at Amberley. We love it. Great vibe, Staff are brilliant. Setting is truly amazing.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Amberley Castle to celebrate our 23rd wedding anniversary. Our room was quiet, comfortable and had beautiful views out to the moat and countryside beyond, and opened out into the historic courtyard by the ancient gatehouse. It was such a privilege to stay in such a historic setting where kings and queens had stayed over the last few hundred years. The staff were brilliant and very welcoming and friendly and we enjoyed using all the facilities, playing croquet and walking around the beautiful grounds. Our dinner in the restaurant was exceptional and breakfasts were delicious. We would definitely recommend Amberley Castle for a romantic getaway.

Our most recent visit to Amberley Castle was to celebrate our mother's 90th birthday, a huge milestone for her and for us at a Relais & Chateaux restaurant and hotel. Clearly, we had chosen the wrong time of the year to visit, although we had hoped that a summer reservation would allow us to have afternoon cream teas outside and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. However, we were told that it would be impossible to do so because it wasn’t warm enough, (it was warm outside) so we were sent upstairs. My own theory is that because there were so many construction workers traversing across the patio whilst performing renovations, the staff was reluctant to allow us to sit outside, something that very much upset our mother. Amberley Castle is not inexpensive for four people to have afternoon cream teas and one would expect scones to be fresh, baked that day, but we all felt that the scones were left over from the previous day, certainly not freshly baked. We also felt that the service was not what we have normally experienced at other Relais & Chateaux establishments, and there seemed to be a certain lack of care. Finally, had we been informed prior to our visit that renovations were being done and that the patio was off limits, it is unlikely that we would have chosen Amberley Castle for what we hoped would turn out to be a great celebration for a very special occasion.

All the staff, without exception, were welcoming, friendly and attentive to our needs. The room located in the castle walls was delightful. Clean and comfortable and well stocked with teas, coffees & water and L'Occitain toiletries. A lovely firm mattress and sink into pillows. A varied menu to choose from and an extensive wine list. The food is alongside the best we've tasted. And it's a castle so a fabulous setting. Expensive but so worth it to celebrate our special occassion.

To stay / eat and sleep in a Castle is a really unique experience and one at Amberley we thoroughly recommend. You won't regret it.

We only visited Amberley Castle for Afternoon Tea, (I’d LOVE to stay overnight though!) but it was a truly wonderful experience from the time we turned into the driveway, through the gardens and to a friendly greeting at reception. The castle is just the perfect venue for any occasion, special or just personal decadence! The Afternoon Tea was a real surprise. After ordering tea from their excellent selection, we were offered a Chef's Special tea in a small glass. Deliciously different! The '1st' course, toasted cheese & tomato sandwich, savoury tart, sausage roll and a platter of tasty sandwiches were served on a 3-tier serving platter and were very, very tasty. Luckily we were both hungry, as we were plied with more tea and the 'sweet' course of our tea - another 3-tiered platter of warm fruit & plain scones, small jars of homemade strawberry jam & clotted cream plus an assortment of exquisite cakes and an apple crumble tartlet. Again, it was all delicious! In fact, it was all so lovely and cosy in the castle on such a wet & miserable Sunday afternoon, that we didn't want to leave - so we didn't! We made ourselves very comfortable with a welcome cup of coffee in one of the cosy lounges and sat right in front of the inviting log fire reading the interesting books of days gone by in Sussex! A BIG thank you to all the hotel and restaurant staff who made us so welcome. It was a very memorable Sunday afternoon and we cannot wait to go back with a large group of friends in December for a private Festive Lunch!

Wonderful property not being cleaned properly , common areas and rooms very poorly maintained. Relais Chateaux need to look at the presentation of this property with some urgency

Quintessential English hotel within castle walls! Great countryside location near the delightful village of Amberley, which is an easy walk from the hotel (exit grounds via car park past tennis court) where there is a lovely tea shop and local pub. First class service from hotel friendly staff from phone booking to our departure. Room beautiful, lounge area cosy and evening meal very tasty.
