I had never stayed at this hotel before & did not read any reviews before booking as it was a last minute change in my workload. I have stayed in a number of Britannia group hotels, & as such did not have huge expectations, having said that they are normally clean & cheap with enthusiastic staff.
As this was a lot more than I would expect to pay & this was classed as an “Elite Hotel” I was expecting a little bit more? As it was based out of town & attached to a golf course you were almost done obliged to eat in the hotel, which we felt was a bit overpriced (being from ‘up-north’0 has its drawbacks - Bacon bun £6 Homemade soup of the day £6, and that was the cheapest - breakfast £16.25 - I accept that people may find these prices normal we found them a bit expensive. Not really a problem as we went into Portsmouth & had 2 large full English & unlimited coffee for £14 total.
Pros: Golf course - (Do not book with room !!) if you book with the room it will try to charge you £100 extra - if you get to the hotel book in the Pro shop which is in the hotel- play after 2 pm - £25.
Fitness centre: well stocked fitness room with plenty of machines - well stocked weights room - I suspect limited appeal to most guests
Swimming pool
Sauna - fits 12 - only allowed 2 in due to covid 19
Steam room both were very good
Bedroom: very good bed
Small but comfortable chair
Big TV
One of the best showers I have ever had (pressure)
Free Parking
Cons: Room has NO information of any kind a bout the Hotel- room- facilities-Local points of interest
We were NOT told about the hotel policy that the room will not be made up on a two night stay?
There was no signage for the door (make up room/do not disturb)
There was only 2 paper cups for Tea/Coffee (there was a kettle )
On our return approx 5pm we were surprised to find the room had not been made up or towels replaced. I went to reception to ask about it to be told by the reception to would leave a note for housekeeping (I wrongly assumed he was going to rectify the situation) as he was trying to check in new guesses i left it with him.
After an hour I went back to reception & once again spoke to the lad, where it turns out there is nobody from housekeeping at work at this time of the day? (What happens if there was a problem with one of the room when someone was checking-in?)
At this point I felt he had done everything he could do & I need to speak to the duty manager! At his point I was told there was no duty manager on duty until the next morning??? What if there was a major incident ??
Soi had 2 dirty towels & 2 dirty paper cups for the rest of my stay!!
I spoke to the Duty manager the following morning to point out I was very unhappy with the management team and her staff for lying to me twice ! & the standard was unacceptable - She apologised & told me “he should not have said that- he should have explained the hotel policy @ check-in I don’t blame the young lad - if he was not trained to do the job correctly the blame lies with the management!
Will I return, mmmm only if I can get it very cheap & only stay for one night
P.s. Don’t forget to take your own cup ….
