The Glen Guesthouse

Shocking experience. We booked this lovely looking hotel on Wowcher. Arrived today at 2.30 ish. I went in and this woman appeared and said can I help you? Yes we have a booking I said. We don’t open till four, she replied frostily! Ok I’ll come back later, I said. She then asked my name flicked through a folder then said well your room is ready just go up, but you won’t have hot water till four! Fill in the breakfast menu for tomorrow and have it down by 9pm tonight. (How will anyone know what they want for breakfast the day before). We went upstairs to a cold, tired room. Hubby gave Norman our Irish Wolfhound his dinner at 5pm and we sat on the bed. It was so cold I had two jackets on. Norman then brought all his dinner up…. On the bed and carpet! I pulled off the cover and saw the thinnest cheapest quilt that looked like it was made of paper. Hubby went down to get some cleaning things and a lady brought them up. She said don’t worry, we usually just have working men in here! We cleaned up and went down to dinner. The woman came in and said you can’t have anything, you didn’t order it. We only made cottage pie tonight and as you didn’t ask you can’t have anythingWtf. I said ok I’m going and went out to reception, she meanwhile told my hubby we could go to the Indian or Chinese. I would never eat in either he said, so she said, well there’s a chip shop in the town! The owner came out and I told him we were not staying. He shrugged his shoulders and told me they were a guest house. I said you’re advertising as an hotel! He said I sent you an email asking if you wanted cottage pie for dinner. How ridiculous I said. He said we didn’t want to waste food, so stopped using a menu. I said that’s just bad management. He told me they were a guest house not a hotel! He again just shrugged and we left. This is NOT an hotel it’s a working man’s doss house. Be warned

It would probably best describe this stay as fine. Booked a family room easily, 2 double beds, single bed & a pop up bed. There was no choice to go room only so hotel was expensive with breakfast for a family of 4. Prices were comparable with city prices. You couldn’t check in until 4pn and latest time for a pre ordered breakfast was 930 on a Sunday. Check out was 1030. Another half hour would have been better. The breakfast was great though. The room was clean with tea & coffee making facilities. Bathroom small & a bit cold. Would agree with earlier comment re shower, it was impossible not to get your hair wet. Selkirk is a lovely place to visit but the hotel could do with some investment for the prices charged, it hasn’t changed much in 25 years.

We've just stayed at The Glen this week for a night whilst walking round the Borders. The owners were friendly and welcoming, the room was large, comfortable and beautifully designed and the breakfast excellent. Best stay we've had anywhere in a good while.

Comfortable and clean and tasteful. View from room #2 is gorgeous. Set back from road not in city center so it is quieter. The host, Steve, was super-nice. Downstairs parlor was fun for playing our card game saboteur. There is also a nice back porch. I liked how this place was outside the city, making for a more peaceful surrounding.

Fantastic couple of nights at The Glen. Family run and super friendly. Room was perfect and breakfast was delicious. Highly recommend if you are looking for somewhere to stay in Selkirk. I will definitely stay here again the next time in town.

This is not a large chain hotel, but rather a charming family run hotel in a large Victorian house. I stayed just one night as I was travelling north with my black Labrador for whom there was no additional charge. I was greeted warmly and given my room key. The single en suite room had a 4’6” bed which was much better than a 3’ single. The room was nicely equipped, very quiet and warm. Lovely breakfast included in the price. I had the set dinner which was simple but beautifully prepared. It fulfilled the brief very well, does what it sets out to do with character. I would definitely return.
