Simpson House Inn

Santa Barbara|6.63km dal centro città
When researching hotels in Santa Barbara, The Simpson House Inn appeared to be the perfect place to stay. Incredible reviews; voted second best hotel in Santa Barbara with a central location. We were very excited for our upcoming stay. I read a couple of the 0-1star reviews but thought; you always get a few bad reviews! However, having since finished our 2 night stay, I wish I had taken the bad reviews seriously as I feel that the majority were both fair and accurate. We felt the Simpson House Inn was a huge disappointment. First off, I would like to state that the grounds were lovely and lived up to the images and reviews. A small complaint (but something we feel you would expect from a 5 star hotel) the cushions on the loungers and chairs were left out at night, therefore in the morning they were always damp with dew and covered in cobwebs and unusable until they dried. When we checked in, there is no help with the luggage to take it upstairs. Again small issue but something I feel you would expect from a 5 star rated hotel. Our room was small, dark and very outdated. Everything creaked and it smelt very damp, it reminded me of an antique centre. The shower in our room was either freezing or boiling. It was clean, however could do with a good dusting. The location is ok. It’s a 10minute walk to the top of state street. And a 40min walk to the pier and funk zone. But, I would not say it was totally central. The afternoon wine tasting and afternoon tea were lovely! However, the gourmet breakfast was very basic and the service incredibly lacklustre. There is no staff on site after 9pm other than a next door caretaker. I personally, found the staff to be unapproachable and cold and not 5 star service. It felt very much that they just wanted to take your money and then to be left alone. Overall, in my opinion The Simpson House Inn is a B&B and not a 5 star hotel. I’m am incredibly surprised as to why they have such great reviews and are considered a 5 star hotel. I would not stay again nor recommend The Simpson House Inn.

I normally don’t leave negative reviews but this place has left me with no choice. First of all, this property is very old - something you can’t tell from the pictures on their website. Secondly, as you enter the room you are hit with a very strong smell of cleaning chemicals. The windows don’t open so you are stuck with that smell for your entire stay…sigh!! Next, this place has no reception counter on the premises. They email you the code to the lock for your room and that’s how you enter the room. Which we thought was cool at first, but when we came into our room we found out that the bathroom didn’t have any bath mats…sigh… so the first thing we had to do was to send a text message to whoever the manager was and let her know that the bathroom didn’t have any bathmats. Half an hour later someone brought us the bathmats. Furthermore, the bathroom (which was tiny) had a bad stench that we couldn’t stand. It appeared to us that the smell came from the water tap of the bathroom sink. It was so strong that we felt that the water was contaminated. So to be safe, we decided to buy water from the store just to wash our hands and brush our teeth. We couldn’t risk using the contaminated water - something we’ve never had to do at any hotels in all our 30+ years of travel in the U.S. Due to the terrible stench in the bathroom, and due to the fear of contaminated water, we decided not to shower at night. Instead we decided to cut short our trip and head home first thing in the morning and shower after reaching home. I am not a very picky traveler, but I travel frequently and I expect clean rooms with no odor or smell and clean bathroom with water quality that I can trust. This place didn’t meet any of the basic requirements. Granted, at the end of the day they apologized for the inconveniences and offered 50% off our bill. But we were there only for one night and we had the most terrible experience ever - something no amount of refunding can make up for. Again, I can not stress enough to say that please stay away from this place and do not fall for the pictures you see on their website. Instead there are better places to stay in Solvang such as Mirabelle Inn, The Winston , The Landsby etc.

The M Solvang

Solvang|0.56km dal centro città
My wife and I had our first stay here for a night in #8 recently to attend the annual Christmas Tree Lighting and next morning Christmas Parade. I have been traveling to Solvang since long before it became a mecca for wine geeks (of which I am one). We have stayed at nearly every other motel/hotel in Solvang and the nearby (3 miles) community of Buellton over the last three decades so this was a first. It is off the beaten path as far as the center of town is concerned; right at the point where it becomes outdoorsy. Most of the others in town are right in town and, although the town rolls up the sidewalks early, the are occasional cars driving down Mission Street, the main drag, upon which at least half of the hotels are located. These are older but updated buildings inside and which do not necessarily have soundproofing against outside noise. None of them are terribly noisy though. The M has none of those problems and your walk into the center of town is 5-7 minutes and not worth starting your car for. The room itself was European Quaint with both older touches combined with some reproductions. For instance, our room had a stained glass window in a window between the room and bathroom. At 5 feet though, it afforded privacy while lighting up the room when the bathroom light was on. The shower/tub was new and interesting enough for me to attach a photo. Unlike some visitors mentioned, I do not believe the room was too small and the bathroom just on the normal side of what I would call compact. There were a few things that were imperfect (like the horizontal blinds were broken in several places- one could not even be raised or lowered) but with COVID I wouldn't expect them to have time, staff, or money to rush out and replace them. The first dozen rooms like we were in were in a ”U” shape at the center of which is the office. A nice garden and fountain were in the center with walkways both around and through. There is a drive-through alley to the left just past this building and there is ample parking in the back with individual but attached units I would describe as ”suites,” each with it's own name, e.g. ”Sweet Pea.” The cost was about the same as comparable hotels in town...except this was only one of three rooms still left when AAA informed us that the room we previously reserved ( and paid for) was not ”guaranteed” after all. First and last time booking through AAA. We felt fortunate to find anything three days before a major Solvang event. We only met one of the staff and she was very pleasant.
