Casa Mauna Boutique Hotel

This is a lovely boutique hotel and the service is great. We thought our driver was lost, but the dusty road eventually led to this gorgeous complex. Be forewarned: There are many steps down to the check-in office. I would wait to confirm my room number before bringing my luggage down and having to lug it back up to my assigned room. The fact that the restaurant is vegan was a comforting surprise. I recommend their green juice — I had two!

Peaceful beauty on the beach! If you enjoy listening to the waves, relaxing and eating Vegan food, this is the place. Delicious food and friendly service. Super clean boutique hotel. Bring your tennis shoes and supportive sandals. Many steps to climb. 76 from beach to our 3 floor unit- closest to the beach- good exercise- but I always use caution. As I write this -one of the hotel cats is purring on my lap. Beautiful birds, iguanas and flowers to see. Best of all is the warm, secluded and clean beach. I would rather be here than Hawaii for pure relaxation- which was what I needed. Did jog into the small town- but other than that- only had rest and relaxation here. Recommend flying into Huatulco airport and getting snacks at a grocery store there. We had such delicious meals here with excellent service. So grateful to have found this gem. We enjoyed our five nights in Salchi. Great beach and surroundings. But it was not complete enjoyment at Casa Mauna. We arrived after that fabulous mountain drive from Oaxaca rather tired. What we did not realise was the number of steps from the parking to the bar to collect the key and then up to the apartment. We had quite a bit of stuff to take down so I asked the man at the bar if there was help. He just said that the gardner had gone and did not offer to help. Great start. A little later I found that I had bought a tin of ground coffee with no opener; no tin opener in the apartment so down to the bar to request one. The reaction was 'we don't use tinned food for anything'. Well that is great but not exactly helpful. He eventually agreed to open it with a knife but begrudgingly (why can't you do it in your apartment....because the knives aren't adequate)!! Ewen appeared and promised a tin opener the next day; none appeared and we spent the stay trying to avoid the jagged edges when we made our own coffee. We have neither compliments or complaints on the restaurant food. One day no hot water as there was a boiler problem. OK. Next day it was that the gas ran out. All fixed through messaging, but two out of five mornings no hot water. However the worst issue was the noise. I do not consider the apartments to be sound proofed. The downstairs one had shouting children until late, and you could hear continual footsteps from the upstairs one. Ewen did kindly let us move apartments for the last two nights. Yes, the view from the top floor apartment is beautiful, Salchi is delightful. The cleaning staff were very good and pleasant to talk to, but some of the other staff members not so.

WARNING! Do NOT stay here unless you have extra time in your schedule. You won’t want to leave. The rooms are beautifully appointed and clean. The views are great from the pool and every room. The beds are comfortable. Wi-Fi is strong, water is hot, water pressure is strong, AC is cold. But most of all the staff were friendly, eager to serve and polite. The full service on-site bar makes amazing smoothies and cocktails. The restaurant is vegan. But don’t let that scare you! I’m not vegan myself, but when it’s prepared as thoughtfully as it is at Casa Mauna, I don’t mind. Breakfast, lunch and dinners are just spectacular in this oasis in the jungle. The road there is a bit washed out and I paved for several kilometers. But don’t let that deter you. Ewen, his wife and caring staff have made this boutique, full service hotel a very special spot to visit in an unexpected location. You won’t want to leave.
