Arriving on a late flight, we got to the hotel at 1am, anticipating smooth check in, good sleep ready for first day of our holiday in Rhodes. But on arrival, we were told without hesitation or double checking, there was no room availability because the hotel is overbooked and we would be taken to the sister hotel ‘nearby’ Rhodes Horizon Marina and upgraded to all inclusive (we’d booked B&B). Too tired to argue our booking was with Horizon Blu we were taken by hotel driver to Marina. An elderly gentleman checked us in, after some faffing about to find us a room! The room was small, the bathroom ridiculously small and the balcony view was to a derelict car park and trash yard. Too tired to ask to change rooms we slept on it and I complained first thing next morning. The receptionist was cross we’d been put into that room and immediately swapped us to a much larger room with a sea view. Great, we thought. We went down for breakfast, which was nice enough, but soon realised the facilities were nowhere near standard expected at Horizon Blu. The pool area is tiny, the restaurant terrace overlooked a noisy side street and worst of all, we realised we were a 55 minute walk from the Old Town compared to the 15 minute walk we expected from Horizon Blu! We decided to take the walk from Marina Hotel to Blu straight after breakfast first to check the length/timing of walk (which was 50 mins to Old Town at a good pace) and second to ask for room availability that day. The receptionist at Blu tried to persuade us to stay at Marina but, whilst I was discussing at reception my husband went for a quick explore of the facilities which he confirmed were far better than Marina Hotel. We told them we were not budging and they had to find us a room. It became apparent we were not the only people this had happened to. There was another couple arguing their position too! Finally a room was found. We were sent back to Marina Hotel in a paid for taxi to collect our bags. Then when we got back in the taxi (minibus) we were joined by two other couples who’d also been moved to Marina the day before and refused to stay! One couple from Horizon Blu booking and one couple from Horizon Resort! We’d all been told the same thing on first arrival, Hotel overbooked! There was no compensation offered (we were more than half way through the first day of our holiday by now). I asked what they could offer. No room upgrade was available (lucky to have one at all apparently!) but we could have two evening dinners and a massage in the spa! Neither appealed to us. We did however retain the blue all inclusive wristbands that we’d been given on going to the Marina Hotel and so used these to access the sunbeds at the beach (will come on to that), the beach snack bar and the pool bar. We didn’t exploit it at all, we are not big drinkers, but it was nice to get refreshments occasionally when we wanted to. Horizon Blu rooms: there are some nice rooms, with sea views but not many. We expected a p
