Ohope Beach Motel

We have been here a few times over 20 years but only one night and were very happy. This time it was 2 nights when we arrived, we had to call for service and was told which unit was ours, no one came to see if we were settled in, just call if you need anything! This was supposed to be a deluxe studio but didn't feel like it - it was more a standard unit. Then end of our first day we returned and found no found no clean towels, bed made up etc. In the morning, we discovered no replenishing of hot choc, milk and sugar, also didn’t see the proprietor / receptionist at all.

I just can’t relate to a few of the very old poor reviews of this place. This is very basic accommodation done very well indeed. It’s spotlessly clean, very well maintained and looks to be recently refurbished and decorated. The pictures don’t do this place justice. It’s comfortable and affordable and cross the very quite road and your on one of the best beaches in the world. I’d happily spend a week here, it’s party trick is it actually has everything you need for a few days by the sea. We stayed as part of our tour of NZ and this place exceeded expectations. Simply furnished but still with a small kitchen tv, comfortable bed washing line and arm chairs and a simple check in, I’m all in. It exceeded expectations and you can park right outside, a brilliant concept.

We had stayed here a few times before over the last nine years. This trip we booked through wotif. We arrived and were taken down the back to what I can only discribe as a converted garage that looked out from the bedroom onto a bank. The woman told us it was the family suite but as there were only the two of us... She locked the extra room. I wasn't happy, it was not the queen studio we had had in the past, the same as the pictures we had seen on the site. She told us we got the grotty by comparison room because we booked through *******! She told my husband she could see I wasn't happy but we could have the room I believed I was booking if we paid MORE. I said forget it. We unloaded into the room, I was fuming, then she turned up & told us she had done some juggling and we could have the queen suite at no extra cost... Probably long enough to see my other reviews. She lied, she told us we were in the family suite & when I said I booked a queen suite she said it was a queen suite. She said they were fully booked but managed to juggle things so we could have the other room. Rubbish, the no vacancy sign never went on in all the time we were there & the grotty room wasn't used, there were other queen suites not used & yes we checked. We went out & our room was entered and a window that could be easily accessed from outside was opened risking our belongings, the only "servicing" that was done was the rubbish bag that had a couple of things in it was removed. The price has dam near doubled since our first stay but apart from converting a garage nothing has been done. The lounge chairs were dirty. Don't bother. It's 6km to Whakatane, stay there.

Just an all around great beach cottage/hotel on one of the most beautiful places...super nice people and perfect.

Tidy, clean, stayed in the studio, beneath the owner's house at rear. Very handy to a lovely beach, excellent chairs and firepit on beachside for guests use. Adequate parking at rear of units for a car also. No direct view of the beach from the studio Proprietor friendly and helpful. Parking for units is directly outside the units, ideal if you have motorcycles Owner requests that all used dishes be washed and put away.

An older style Motel that was for sale during our stay. It is very comfortable and relaxing. Quiet during our stay. A short walk 15 minutes to dairy and couple of cafes. Loved the Moxi cafe good coffee and very friendly. 2 hot plates for cooking if so desired. Outside table nice to sit for drink or dinner. Only negative was being older and for sale in need of a few maintenance issues cobwebs and bird poo on windows. My personal pethate dirty window tracks. Felt like a seaside batch. Site may get redeveloped in the future.
