Hawaii Volcano House

１２月２３日から2泊しました。昼間、ディナーの時間はレストラン利用で客が多勢いましたが、部屋は静かでした。エントランスのリビングの暖炉の前のリクライニングチェアーでウェルカムドリンク&クッキーをいただきました。とても雰囲気が良く暖かいです。モーニングビュッフェは宿泊者は18ドルで食べられます。　 オーダーして作ってくれるオムレツ、ワッフル、フレッシュフルーツ、そしてコーヒー。 キラウエア火山を目の前に頂く朝食は素晴らしいです。今回3度目の宿泊ですが、また泊まりたいと思えるホテルです。

This is definitely a little older hotel. It was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. Staying in the middle of the activities for the volcano park was a great choice. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We only got desert at the restaurant but that was really good. There is no TV in the room but we didn't have time for that. Free coffee in the morning and mimosa in the evening.

We stayed here as a family with our 10 year old son while exploring Volcano National Park. We had a great stay. The room was what we expected and met our needs. Note there are no tvs in the room, but there is free WiFi so kids can still stream everything on their devices. Looking out your window at the crater is unbelievable and truly a unique experience. We ate breakfast at the hotel each morning. It’s a buffet with tasty options including fresh baked items (the fresh blueberry scones had just come out of the oven and were still warm!). Note there is a discount for breakfast for hotel guests. We found the price quite fair for a hotel buffet. For us, having the hotel as a home base for exploring was perfect. It allowed us to explore and then come back for breaks before heading back out. Staff were all very friendly as well.

My wife and I had stayed in a number of 'historic' hotels in National Parks and while they have always been interesting places to check out they often are not the best places to stay (the Old Faithful Inn in particular comes to mind - wander into the lobby but DO NOT stay there). Anyway with our experiences in mind I hesitated to stay at Volcano House - another inn with no air conditioning and no televisions? Will it have no wi-fi like the lowly Old Faithful Inn? I'm happy to pass on that the Volcano House does indeed have no air conditioning and no televisions - but it does have good wi-fi and a lot of good character too - it's a great choice. We arrived at 10 AM - way too early to check in - but Michelle at the front desk was happy to pre-check us in anyway and was a pleasure to chat with. She gave us a good overview, stowed our luggage, and sent us out to tour with a smile. In the early afternoon we took a break to have a delicious pizza and beer at Uncle George's Lounge (the hotel bar) and found our room was ready. The room was clean, spacious (enough), and the kicker was the view of the crater out our large windows. We had a ground floor room so we were able to walk right out the door to the crater walkway, or we could sit and gaze from one of the many lounge chairs tucked up against the hotel. We had dinner at the cozy hotel bar later on (full of hardworking and friendly staff) and went back to our room to gaze at the sunset, and eventually, the Milky Way. We were able to stream whatever videos we wanted over the wi-fi, and the hotel grew quiet quickly. The lack of air conditioning was never a concern - on this early October day the daytime temperatures were in the 70s - and it got down to the high 40's overnight. The only minor downsides we ran into was the fairly loud sounds of the guests above us as they walked around their room, and the thin wall between our room and the hotel hall outside our room. The hotel's quiet hours start at 10 PM but all was quiet before then, however. The hotel is a bit pricey but we were very happy with our experience, and felt it was worth the cost.

Upon arrival, there was no elevator up to our rooms so we had to lug our cases up the outside fire escape stairs in the pouring rain. We’d been travelling around for 3 weeks so had many heavy cases. Rooms were very basic and had not moved on in the last 70 years. Restaurant was described as ‘a la carte’ dining, but was definitely far from it. Food was mediocre at best and there was a very limited menu. Breakfast was very sparse and nothing really labelled well. Just said ‘fruit’ or ‘bread’ but didn’t tell you what flavours or specify more. Cold showers due to maintenance error of the pipe work the previous day and one shower just completely stopped working after 5 minutes of it running. This was allegedly sorted when mentioned to reception (it wasn’t and we had to ask again the next day) however, maintanence had left muddy footprints on floor and bathroom mat which then had to be cleaned up by us. We left the muddy towels out to be changed by house keeping, who never turned up. Then had to go down to reception at 11pm to ask for clean towels to be able to shower. When we got back from our day out, the room hadn’t been serviced at all again (didn’t come into our rooms at all the whole stay) even though we were asked on check in if we wanted a daily service and we said yes. We also come back to find that maintenance had relieved themselves in our toilet and had left it in a complete mess, with urine all around the seat and on the floor. We then had to go down to reception once again who advised us that housekeeping had gone home as it was 10pm but she would come up and clean it for us. Staff were polite but there were no real apologies for anything. Not that we would’ve wanted it but there was no offer of any kind of compensation for this and it was a pretty inexcusable complaint. We felt violated that our room had been used when we weren’t there and wondered what else they could’ve done that we hadn’t noticed. They also took $250 from our account without informing us and when questioned just said ‘oh, no idea what that’s for’ and refunded it. Curious to know if they would’ve kept it if we hadn’t have questioned it. We also had to pay $30 to even get into volcano park to our hotel, which seems steep, surely if you’re staying in the hotel you should get a pass to be able to get to it without paying the fee. Overall it was a place to sleep, the beds were comfortable and staff were polite but that’s all the positives there were. We definitely won’t be returning and would strongly suggest avoiding it if you don’t want staff coming into your room/bathroom and using it as if it were their own place.
