Hotel St.Thomas

Had a lovely weekend away with my husband. Quaint rooms, we requested one with a small balcony. Lovely breakfast. Xavier, Nicole and rest of the staff all friendly and courteous. We had valet parking, just call 15 minutes ahead of time if you need it. $40 per night.

I stayed at two different Montreal hotels over the course of two trips in Fall 2023, with this being one and other being in Old Montreal/port area (see my other review). Both were pleasant, but different - and Hotel St. Thomas was somewhat more expensive without necessarily being more luxurious. The room at Hotel St. Thomas was spacious and very quiet, with a very big bathroom (separate bathtub and shower). The breakfast was included and served in the downstairs restaurant/bar area; it was fairly basic (some mini-croissant and bagels and a small hot selection of foods), but a bonus was you could order specialized espresso drinks (much tastier than the in-room coffee options!) The neighborhood was definitely less touristy than the other hotel I'd stayed at in Vieux Montreal, and was readily walkable to many cute, local shops/estaurants/bars (and if you arrive by train from Gare Centrale, it is fairly easy to take the metro here from Station Bonaventure to Station Sherbrooke, which is less than a 4 minute walk from the hotel).

My wife and I drove to Montreal to visit our son on 5/28/23 and 5/29/23. We made a two night reservation at the Hotel St. Thomas. I asked one of the staff members whether the Valet Parking that they offer was safe and secure as we felt that it would be logistically easier for us than parking at the recommended lot near our son’s condo. I was assured that it was “safe and secure” and monitored by video surveillance, so we decided to utilize the valet service. On the morning of 5/30/23, I requested that my car be brought around to the front at 8:00am (we had a long drive back to our home in Baltimore, MD, USA). My car did not arrive at 8:00am, so at about 8:20am, I asked the person at the desk about the delay. She told me that “your car has been stolen”. Needless to say, we were in shock. We called the police and after a short time a very nice officer arrived and filed a report. He also explained that car theft is a terrible problem in Montreal. He explained that the thieves are very sophisticated and that they target US cars which they steal and take to the nearby port for quick shipment abroad. We called Lexus to have them try to trace the car to no avail (the officer said that the first thing that the thieves do is to disable the tracking system). We then walked around to the allegedly “safe and secure” parking lot to see it first-hand. It’s open air with very easy access. We immediately called our insurance company (Geico) to file a claim. We then had to figure out how to get home. We tried the airlines, but the few flights that were available were outrageously expensive. We then tried rental cars, but there were none available at any of the rental car companies that could be picked up in Montreal and dropped off in the US. We finally found an Uber driver who was willing to drive us to the Burlington, VT airport where we could rent a car from Budget for our drive back to Baltimore. Geico does not cover the cost of a rental car until 48 hours after the event is reported so we had to personally pay for the rental car to get us back to Baltimore, the above mentioned Uber ride, the approximately $1,822 of personal items in the car, and the $250 insurance deductible. After we returned home, I called the hotel’s owner to ask about the video footage of the parking lot. He said that they saw nothing on the video (makes me suspicious regarding whether there really is video surveillance) and to request reimbursement for our out-of-pocket costs resulting from the theft of our car while it was under their custody and care. Honestly, the hotel surely knew of the problem of car thefts in Montreal and should have warned us and forgone the $35 parking fee. If they had, we would have used the other parking facility recommended by our son. The owner passed me off to the hotel administrative staff. I sent the staff an email, and they replied with an offer to reimburse us for the Uber ride ($275.71) and a 15% discount on our stay ($90.08). In summary, our out-of-

Great little boutique hotel - great location walking distance from the main bus station (can get the 747 bus to and from the airport from there) Staff all very friendly and the room was great. Also the prices of the drinks and food in the bar were very reasonable !

Beautiful room with a lot of space, good breakfast, friendly service and a neighbourhood (Quartier Latin) with a lot of restaurants. Easy walk to the old town or 2 metro stations to go further. One of the best hotels to start a roundtrip in Montreal.

This hotel randomly canceled our booking, without letting us know, for the weekend of the Formula One Grand Prix in June. They confirmed our booking in October, and it was only when I called them randomly in March that I found out our booking had been canceled. They said they had a system error, and attempted to contact all parties affected. They had my email and phone number and yet did not contact me via either method. They have rooms available that weekend, but at double the price. This is clearly an attempt to price gouge, seeing as all the other hotels in Montreal are sold out now. The reservations clerk was condescending, and while we were told the owner would call us to rectify the situation initially, we were then told the owner could not be bothered to call us at all and the previous confirmed price would not be honored. Thank God we called them in March, otherwise we would have shown up to the Grand Prix weekend without a place to stay. I understand wanting to make money from a busy weekend, but it is not our fault that this hotel does not know when the Montreal Grand Prix takes place, and tries to price gouge after the fact. Totally unethical. Don’t book here, unless you want to end up homeless for a weekend.

This hotel has some unique and great features but also bad ones. Start with the good ones: amazing bed, large room, incredible shower. However the breakfast is a joke. The food comes from another location in small bags. The pastries look bad. There was either coffee or bottled un-fresh orange juice. Omelette in a small envelope. There is only Netflix on TV, so no regular channels. Didn’t have an elevator to our room.

The staff went above and beyond to make me feel special for my birthday, leaving me a box of goodies! The breakfast was great, delivered to our room. The hotel is new and clean and has chic design. The shower and tub were spa quality and even the hand soap was luxe and smelled amazing! It's true that the mattress is definitely firm, and the check in process was long for us even though we filled out our information in advance. We got massages at Espace Thomas which were fantastic, then enjoyed the rooftop hot tub. It's about a 7 minute walk from the hotel to get to the spa. Would recommend!
