Daunts Albatross Motel

Overall a wonderful stay. My wife and I stayed with our infant this past weekend and the staff overall was great except for minor interaction with the clean staff. Room cleaning seemed to be on a different schedule by the day (not a issue). However one of the afternoons, we had a somewhat hostile, quick conversation and were told to "hurry up" and leave our room so it could be cleaned. Definitely not something that was expected and left a sour taste. Other than that, only great things to say about the Albatross and its restaurant Bird on the Roof. We cannot recommend the restaurant enough. The food, drinks, atmosphere and service were all top notch. Having an infant, we are somewhat on a set schedule at night and our room was equipped with a white noise machine I can assume is used by guests at night while others are free to converse at the nighttime bonfires right outside the rooms. It was a nice touch that we weren't expecting.

I had a standard room and a suite was traveling with family. #5 and #8 actual rooms are a lot older than in photos, paint in bathroom is chipped, lots of rust and horrible smell of mold which sticks to your clothes. no vanity items are available even for purchase. I paid 2400 dollars for 2 nights extremely overpriced for what it was. It would be OK for half of what I paid. Location was close to beach, the restaurant is great but hotel is across from laundromat which I didn't like. staff was very friendly.

It is a bit of a hit or a miss with Daunt’s. Very inconsistent. We usually stay here during the off season as the place we prefer is closed during this time. I had a couple of odd experiences here though. First weird experience was in March 2023. The housekeeper kept peeking in our room. I closed the curtains and maybe like 15 minutes later she opened the door and came right into our room without knocking insisting we were due to leave. My husband explained we were booked until the next day and she kept insisting we weren’t. Then she left. We never complained. She never came back. I guess she realized she was wrong. In December of 2023, everything was pretty perfect. Our room was light and airy, very clean. The Christmas decorations outside were beautiful. Everything was wonderful. Then in February of 2024, we got the worst room imaginable. It’s the off season and I can’t imagine they are booked solid but this room was dingy and had a bad vibe. I can’t explain it, but I didn’t feel relaxed and content. I felt uneasy during my stay. The room smelled like cigarettes and on the back deck there was a glass cup filled with cigarette butts. We did tell the front desk about the cigarettes. She apologized and removed the glass. I should have asked for a different room, but didn’t want to make trouble. To make for a creepier stay, the housekeepers’ cart was parked outside our window with a big knife out in the open on top of it. The door had to be aligned perfectly to lock, and it felt that someone could just barge in the door if they wanted. Needless to say we were creeped out. I wanted to ask for a room change, but didn’t want to be a complainer. In retrospect, I should have. Overall, we will most likely take our chances and come back next fall/winter. We do love the court yard and the igloos set up for winter. Christmas decorations were beautiful too. I wish the place was more consistent because we want to really like it. Sadly, there aren’t many options in Montauk off season, and that’s our favorite time to visit.

Great location. Bird on the roof was excellent. Nice pool area but a dog was using the pool. Front desk guy was great.Had bicycles for guests. Close to lighthouse and camp Hero. Rooms are very small but clean.

Perfect hotel to stay during Montauks off season. Close to town,quiet, clean and accommodating staff. Kitchenette and balcony were an added plus. Enjoyed our spacious room and close location to the beach.

I traveled solo to Montauk in the off season in February because I had a couple of gigs - I’m a musician. Daunt’s is super chill and couldn’t be more comfortable. I felt very safe, the room was clean and the shower was really nice. I appreciated the subtle details like a dimmer on the lights, bathroom fan, and above all the noise maker. I honestly didn’t want to leave! This is a great family run business, totally unpretentious and within walking distance to several shops, restaurants and the beautiful beach. I hope I’ll be back! We went for a family wedding in early June and had three rooms for three nights in June.We did not have a rental car, so we wanted to stay somewhere close to the town of Montauk. I was apprehensive about the motel as we are use to bigger hotels with a lot of amenities but we really enjoyed our stay, We had a King room, a room with two doubles and a queen room. The King room and the two doubles were both great. The redo was done very nicely and decorated with a sparse beachy theme. Sometimes this works, and other times it doesn't. Here, in my opinion, it does. The queen room was quite small and did not get good light at all. I'm not sure if that was unique to that room or all queen rooms. Had I seen it the first night, I would have tried to move my son. In my opinion, in this case, the extra for the king would be worth it. But the bed was still comfortable, the room well decorated and like all rooms, spotless. We spent one day out at the pool area and it was quite nice. I was expecting a small tight pool since we were so close to town but it wasn't at all. Nice lounge chairs, an open feel and a large enough pool. It (and the rooms) were spotless. We enjoyed the fire pit at night which gave my group a place to gather and chat in the evening. We also enjoyed bird on a roof every morning for breakfast and one evening for drinks. It was a great edition and we would often meet others from the wedding party who were not staying at the hotel at Bird on the Roof. All enjoyed it. We will definitely stay again on our next trip to Montauk!

My wife and I stayed at Daunts Albatross between May 30 - June 2, 2023. We had stayed here previously, several times, as had my wife’s parents, but this was our first visit since the renovations. From the first call to book our stay (Claudine was amazing), to the morning we checked out, everything we experienced was exceptional. Our room (the two room suite) was clean, simply but nicely furnished and was a tremendous upgrade since our last stay (pre-renovations). Considerable thought clearly went into updating the property while still maintaining a casual and welcoming vibe that Montauk has long been known for. The carpeted floors have all been replaced with stone (a wise decision in a beach community) and the bathroom was nicely updated with an amazing shower. The beds were comfortable and the linens of nice quality. The sense of welcome and attention to detail from every staff member we came in contact with was outstanding. The housekeeper (Savina ?) was pleasant, accommodating and excellent at all that she did during our stay. There were staff visible throughout each day and all were pleasant and attentive. The pool area was spa like. It has also been upgraded with nice patio furniture, landscaping, an outdoor grill and oven and even an area for yoga. There were fire pits in the courtyard each night and unlike other guests that complained about noise, that was never a concern and the fires were extinguished at 10 pm nightly in deference to all guests. The property is dog friendly and each day we were greeted by Koda, the resident retriever. While not directly on the beach, Daunts is a one block walk to the sand and surf of Montauk. Daunts has taken over Bird on the Roof restaurant and also upgraded that property (physically and with a new menu). We visited for happy hour, breakfast and late evening drinks / small plates and each visit was better than the last. The offerings are varied, the food quality excellent and the presentation really nicely done. As with Daunts, the staff at “The Bird” are pleasant, attentive and welcoming. Shout out to Sophia, Brianna and our favorite… Malcolm, for making us feel like we were family while visiting. Thanks to Leo, Zoey and the entire staff at Daunts and The Bird. You are clearly continuing the tradition of a comfortable and welcoming getaway location that your parents and grandparents started many years ago. We can’t wait to come back… see you all soon!

The property is beautiful and the rooms are very cute. front desk staff was very gracious and accommodating. We will definitely be back, and tell our friends to come too! I loved the communication from the hotel, we knew everything we needed to before we came. They also gave us a gift card to their sister restaurant across the street!
