Sporting Lodge Inn Middlesbrough

My daughter wanted a night away just the 2 of us with spa facilities and google led us here! The hotel itself is very dated however the beds were the comfiest i have ever slept in! We went to use the 'spa facilities' pool was nice, only half was available due to swimming lessons. The hottub, sauna and steam room were too busy to use-but that cant be helped as its a large hotel. I was really disappointed at the state of the changing rooms as they were dirty-hair all over and a really awful smell. The staff were fabulous! The receptionist was welcoming and helpful, the receptionist for the fitness centre was really nice too. But the hospitality staff were really good! We went and had cocktails and a meal in the adjoining bar and restaurant and each member of staff couldn't do enough for us! Breakfast was nice, with huge variety and again the staff were exeptional...really warm, welcoming and funny! The housekeeping team all said hi too! So, overall the staff alone would be 5* but the tired/worn facilities were a bit naff!

I stayed in ‘The Slaven’ at the Sporting Lodge. Staff upon arrival and throughout the stay were very kind, helpful and well mannered. Room was absolutely spotless. Shower was amazing, both the bed itself and the view outside was remarkable. Was recommended to try the food in the bar. I got the Chicken Parmsesan, both the bar staff and the food itself I can’t speak highly enough of. Very fresh. All in all this was a 10/10 experience and can’t speak highly enough of the staff and the hotel itself as a whole. Given previous stays in other hotels in Middlesbrough, I can safely safe these were the best by a distance.

When I arrived, the car park is bashed up and rough, and the building looked like it hasn't had a makeover since the 1970s. Still, I wasn't expecting the absolute failure that was realising on the morning I left that the door of my room didn't lock. So it was a key card door, there is no way to manually lock it from the outside - so it needs to lock when closed. But it didn't. So when I went out for dinner, anyone could have just opened the door and stolen my stuff. When I was sleeping, anyone could have just come in. The taps in the bathroom didn't really work, the shower is decades old.

After reading some of the negative reviews I was slightly worried about staying here. However, I can honestly say I had a great comfortable night. The hotel is advertised as ‘buget’ so if you’re wanting 5 star luxury then find another hotel. However, If you’re looking for a good nights’ sleep in a quiet, spacious comfortable room at a great price then this is the place for you. The rooms are slightly dated but very clean with crisp white linen. Food was great and reasonably priced. I also received complimentary access to the on site gym/pool but unfortunately didn’t have the time to visit. I honestly couldn’t find anything to complain about. I would definitely stay here again.

I stayed at this Middlesbrough hotel on 12th March as part of a business trip, and I must say I was profoundly disappointed, particularly given the "executive" upgrade I had purchased. Room 115 was far from the standard I expect from a 4-star establishment, let alone an upgraded room. The decor was dated and frankly, grubby. The lack of basic toiletries was a significant oversight, and the overpowering smell of TCP or disinfectant was extremely unpleasant and lingered throughout my stay. I'm genuinely perplexed as to how this room could be classified as "executive" and would appreciate a response from the hotel explaining this....... While the accommodation was a major letdown, I must commend the hotel on two aspects. The gym access was a welcome addition and a great way to unwind after a long day. More surprisingly, the evening food was exceptionally good. Given the poor state of the room, I had low expectations, but the quality and taste were genuinely impressive. Unfortunately, the poor room experience has overshadowed the positives. It's a real shame, as the food and gym were excellent, but I simply cannot justify staying here again. For future business trips to Middlesbrough, I'll be returning to the reliable comfort of a Premier Inn.
