Dar Ben Gacem

In April I was in this hotel with a friend, whose name is Chiara. This latter paid, by a mistake of the staff, the due amount twice. Since April Chiara has send unsuccessfully several emails and messages; she has also contaqcted them by phone, receving from the staff a promise of taking care of the case. It was agreed that the amount would be transferred to my friend's bank account in Italy. Unfortunatelly, this has never happended and the hotel staff every time has found many silly excuses. They even requested, surprisingly, a letter from my friend's bank a statement of acceptance of this amount. Chiara sent them a letter of the Italian bank confirming tha the account is genuine and tha twas more than enough. Probably they hope that mwe will give up and they can keep Chiara's money! As everybody can understand, this is truly a dishonest and unacceptable behaviour; just for few hundreds euro we now have to involve a lawyer in order to get the money back! We want everybody to know this story and avoid booking this hotel for their stay in Tunis.

This traditional "dar" - with a handful of guest rooms surrounding a central courtyard - was just a fabulous place to stay. First off, its design is super charming -- the rooms have mosaics, intricate plaster design, local art, hookahs, and more. And possibly the highest ceilings of any place we've every stayed! Next, the staff is hospitable and helpful, and the daily breakfast is too generous (but a welcome treat). Third, its location is perfect, in the heart of Tunis and easy walking distance to the souks, central downtown, and local restaurants/cafes. My wife and I would easily recommend this to anyone visiting Tunis!

The hotel or guest house is beautifully positioned within the Medina . The rooms are clean & have a Tunisian character with vaulted ceilings . The bed is larger than a European double but not king size. Breakfast is ample with a cheese omelette/ fruit / pain chocolate/ cheese coffee or tea. The staff couldn’t be more helpful They booked a restaurant nearby that sent a security person to guide us there & back . Nothing is too much trouble . We organised through the hotel ,a private guide , car (new vw with ac) & driver to see Tunis medina & Carthage. Pick up at the airport & drop off.Well worth the visit

Everyone raves, but I found it to be just ok. I stayed in the king suite on the main courtyard (only room available) and it was quite pricey, but large. The Dar itself is pretty and authentic and the room is too. But it feels old and looks worn. I get that it is actually old, but other dars I stayed in were maintained better. The bathroom was soooo tiny (even by European standards). I am an average sized woman and could barely move in the shower. Water in shower had good pressure and was warm (mot super hot). They provide only soap and shampoo (no lotion) and there is a hair dryer. Towels were soft. Bed was ok (pillows not great). Wifi in room was awful. You have to use in the courtyard and it works well enough for WhatsApp video calls. Courtyard rooms are a bit noisy and curtains don’t fully block light. Breakfast was fruit, juice, breads, an egg, and coffee/tea. Staff was super helpful!! Overall, I’m not sure I would return for the price. There are other dars that have a bit more modern amenities.

This is a lovely boutique hotel in the Tunis Medins, just a 5-10 minute walk from the souqs and main mosque. Rooms are beautiful and are set around a courtyard where breakfast is served. Staff are exceptional. They speak good English and are very helpful. The only downside is that the Medina is very quiet at night and I did not feel perfectly safe walking back to the hotel in the dark after dinner.

We visited Dar Ben Gacem in April. The hotel is beautiful. It retains its old charm while adding details for modern comfort. As others have written, the best thing of all is the staff. Youssef was so accommodating and helped us to find a guide for the Medina, Hassen, whose slow and deliberate pace was a nice change from the regular hustle and bustle of touring. The map of the Medina (with the "treasure hunt" for important buildings) was also great. Thank you to Dar Ben Gacem (and its sister hotel) and everyone who treated us with such kindness and hospitality.
