Schlosshotel Mailberg Visited the place late October 2021 for a weekend hideaway to celebrate our anniversary date. Some folks might say the place is at the edge of nowhere. At the hotel was the restaurant closed, for drinks a vending machine was at the premises. Nearby (about 20 minutes walk) you could find two restaurants (Genusswirtschaft & Weindomizil Hagn) which are apparently always fully booked. The place we went the first evening (Hagn) was very reluctant to offer a place for two although it was early evening and the restaurant (I would say easily seating 150 persons) was almost empty. For the following day it was impossible to make a booking. Also Genusswirtschaft was fully booked. As a result we decided to buy some snack for the evening during our day trip to Retz. Was a really unusual quiet evening meal in our room. Check in was easy, the room provided was very spacey, interior as you may expect somehow old fashioned, the bed was huge and we dare say, the best mattress we ever slept in an hotel on. Also the heating was on full blast and the room was so warm, we never expected in an old castle. The shower tap could do with descaling. Breakfast was provided in a rather tiny surrounding, choice for a 4 star place not up to our expections. WiFi, considering the dimension of the walls was satisfying. We found it an experience, the place has its charm however considering all aspects it will be a one time experience.
