Having treated friends to Afternoon Tea at this location on many occasions over the years, and enjoyed it immensely, I was looking forward to this visit. Unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations due to the decorative changes that have been made since my last visit. The bar and dining area have been refurbished/redecorated with stark white plantation shutter style blinds, white walls and light wood laminate flooring replacing the parquet /carpet and curtains that gave the rooms their cosy country house ambience. The addition of white opaque glass folding doors half way down the dining room did nothing to improve the overall impression - it just looks cold and uninviting. The only colour in the room came from the cheap lime green paper napkins that replaced the linen napkins that I'm pretty sure were supplied previously. The actual afternoon tea had changed too, but was still very good, although not as plentiful, as we did manage to eat it all! I'm not sure why the menu is now stuck inside the first pages of a Jemima puddle duck reading book either. Seems a bit of a silly gimmick to me and just got in the way on the table. The staff were lovely, and overall it was a nice afternoon, but I won't be returning as, for me, this refurbishment has ruined a lovely bar and dining room, and I really don't want to see what they might do to the cosy lounge, which still has a lovely cosy country house ambience but for how long? I'll keep my memories of the hotel as it used to be.
