Crown and Garter

We stayed for one night at the Crown and Garter. Lovely well appointed rooms in a beautiful courtyard setting. Room was clean with a good variety of teas and coffee along with both still and sparkling water. Excellent information provided in the room booklet. Heating adjustments worked well. Bathroom well stocked with toiletries and plenty of towels. Lovely shower, and the automatic light in the small vestibule is a thoughtful touch - it gently illuminates the way as you enter, preventing you from stepping straight into the sleeping area, which I know some people prefer to avoid. The courtyard area outside has been beautifully designed with many separate seating areas. Whilst the evening menu wasn’t extensive, the food was very good and service attentive. We were asked to pre order our breakfast the night before with a menu provided for us to choose from. This helped manage the orders in the morning and the breakfast was excellent. Good choice of traditional English breakfast, toast, eggs, croissant and granola with yogurt. Plenty of parking available too. Great hosts and nothing was too much trouble. My wife and I recently stayed at the Crown and Garter by way of a trip down memory lane to where we met many years ago. The welcome on arrival that we received was excellent and when we were first shown to our room the impression was how good it looked. However, it did disappoint in several ways. There was mould and stains around the shower grouting and also on the base of the shower walls and when we took a shower it became obvious why as the room filled with steam and the extractor fan was inadequate to cope, to the extent even the walls of the adjacent room lobby were dripping. The tall headboard in the room was covered in a thick layer of dust and the drawer in the desk had not been cleared out from previous guests. One further point, in order to dry her hair, my wife had to stand as when sat at the chair the mirror was too high. However, the bed was extremely comfortable and rest of the room facilities adequate. The breakfast selection and quantity was poor. No cereal or fruit option, a fixed breakfast with just the basic choices and a slice of dry toast. On our first morning there was a problem with the cooking but management dealt with that in a timely manner so no further comment. We took dinner both evenings in the restaurant and although the menu was quite stylish and portions not that big, the presentation and cooking was excellent if somewhat pricey. Although I have made these comments, I have still chosen to give 3 stars because all the staff were efficient and friendly and work extremely hard to look after their customers which is a credit to the management. The Crown and Garter retains the feeling of a lovely country pub which in these times is not easy

This was an overnight stay on the way to Devon. We were met by charming friendly taff and shown to our room in its own enclosed courtyard. The room was well furnihed, clean and nothing to fault. Dinner was excellent wit super service and good value - you need a good appetite as the portions are very generous. Breakfast was very good. Overall a very good short stay. We would definitely stay again.

We absolutely loved our stay at The Crown and Garter. The hotel itself is full of charm — cozy, comfortable, and beautifully kept. Our room was spotless and inviting, making it the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring. One of the highlights of our visit was the bar area, where we had the chance to meet and chat with some of the locals. The atmosphere was so friendly and welcoming — it truly felt like a home away from home. The staff were wonderful, attentive, and made sure every detail of our stay was enjoyable. We left with such fond memories and can’t wait to return. Highly recommend this gem in Newbury!

We were here for 3 nights over the August bank holiday weekend. All rooms separate to the pub with their own courtyard. Room - had everything we needed - bed, table, kettle, huge selection of teas, coffee, still and sparkling water, toiletries. Our room (room 10) had shower only - not a problem for us, but worth noting for anyone needing a bath. Courtyard - Window and door from room opened out to lovely courtyard - with patio, flowers and chairs and tables to sit outside. Sometimes we’d have people sitting outside our bedroom window - patrons from the cafe, which is on the same complex. Didn’t bother us, as the room had blinds. Did mean that we would sometimes have the light on in the room, during the day (as the blinds were closed). Staff - everyone super friendly and welcoming. Because we were staying for 3 nights we would often be recognised and the staff would have a chat. Highly recommend base. Parking available on site and brilliant walks direct from the pub.

One nights stay at the Crown & Garter - lovely large room - modern bathroom. Great cooked breakfast. We had a very tasty meal the night before - all fab - can’t recommend enough. The staff all worked so hard.
