On the island's east side, the Wailua River wends its way through dense forests and plunges over waterfalls before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. To the south is the tourist district, once the vacation destination of royalty. On the west side, is the sleepy town of Waimea, near where Captain Cook first landed. In the center of the island is Mount Wai'ale'ale, the Earth's rainiest spot. Activities: In addition to the beach across the river in front of your vacation home, which is about a 10 minute walk around the bay to access it, you can drive a few minutes north or south for world-famous surfing, diving and snorkeling at Tunnels Beach, or continue past the wet and dry caves to the end of the road at Haena. Snorkel there, or start your North Shore hike along Kauai's famed Na Pali coastline.
