At 10.30am, we were jolted awake by violent knocking on the door, rattleing of the handle and attempted entry as we were not informed check out was 10.30 but we’re instead asked when we wanted to leave upon arrival so this was quite startling.

I really wish we had booked somewhere else. We wanted a convenient night stay near a part of London we were visiting. Unfortunately, this was an absolute let down. Pros: • The First Lady we spoke to on the phone to confirm our booking was polite and helpful Cons: Bedroom • Incredibly small - double bed pushed up against a wall so you can only access it on one side. Not suitable for 2 people. • Plug socket not usable as this was up against the bed (see pictures) • No plug socket above bedside table • Room incredibly dirty - long hairs left inside of shower, we were certain it hadn’t been cleaned, but unfortunately this looked to be true of the whole hotel • Bed very hard - woke up with back, hip and neck pain and we only managed to sleep for an hour or so Bathroom • Completely worn down - grout dirty, everything was chipped and even the shower door struggled to close. Definitely not a shower you want to stand in bare foot • Shower unusable - you have hot and cold taps in the shower that you have to adjust to get the required temperature (outdated) but even when you think you have an ok temperature I think it must be connected to our bathrooms in the buildings as I was burnt 2 times by scalding temperatures, so much so that even turning the cold tap on full and the hot tap on low it didn’t return back to normal and therefore couldn’t finish my shower • No body wash available - only hand soap And the cherry of the cake… Breakfast • This started ok..ish. There is a continental with some pastries and cereals, and a menu that gives you a full breakfast option (even though the waitresses do not explain this option and you don’t really understand what is and isn’t included in your stay). But what topped it all for us was.. • Breakfast finished at 9.30am. At 9am a family came in and were told they could no longer sit in the breakfast area and had to sit in the front cafe - away from the continental buffet breakfast. Then asked us to leave in the middle of eating breakfast (at 9am) as they had a “conference” booked in the room!!!! They suggested moving our plates and food through to the front room, but after all the drama we just put down our cutlery and left our food half way through eating breakfast. This is completely unacceptable!! Can I suggest that Best Western only book conferences from 10.30am onwards to allow time for those that have paid for breakfast to eat in peace. Meaning you can serve breakfast until 9.30am as advertised, allow 30mins for those to eat that may have come down just before 9.30am, then have 10am - 10.30am to clean and prepare. OR just sit everyone in the front cafe area from the beginning so you don’t disturb customers half way through breakfast!!!! I complained at the Reception desk after this and all I received was a “sorry about that”. Everything about this stay was terrible. Next time I would rather pay double just to stay somewhere else.

It took a little while to find the hotel once I’d arrived and was worried that I was overrunning my booking-in time and thought I was going to end up on the streets, but luckily after having asked directions, I found the hotel eventually and on arriving, they attempted to contact me, which I had no knowledge of, so luckily they were still open, giving me the opportunity to book in and pay the rate for the week, which was brilliant. I was in Room 22, based on the ground floor, right by the breakfast room, to which, was very enjoyable, nicely presented and cooked, where you had freedom to help yourself to a lovely array of items such as sausages, hash browns, scrambled egg, toast, cereal, yoghurt and juice, all inclusive in the price, which I’d say is a hidden gem in Ilford, which is a fair distance from London. Ilford itself is a multi-cultural and faith town, plenty of well-known and independent shops; it is a buzzing place, plenty of life and people from all walks of life. There is also a shopping mall which is worth a visit too! Plenty of buses, including the number 25 which is ideal for travelling right into the heart of the Capital. Taxis, also the TfL main line station serving other stations such as Stratford for Westfield and the Olympic Village, connections available onto the London Underground (Central Line, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), Jubilee, Circle, District Lines - certainly well-served for that area! The hotel room was big and spacious, high ceilings, pleasant en-suite, Freeview, coffee and tea making facilities, double bed, plenty of storage, heating; the only issue I had was that there was no sound-proofing between the floors and all movement above was extremely “stompy,” and got annoying some times! I would fully recommend the hotel, as there is St. Valentine’s Park and a 20-minutes walk up to Gants Hill, where you can get the Central Line, another alternative to the busy Ilford main station. I’m now back at home and thoroughly enjoyed my week there and only cost £298 for the whole week! The staff were generally friendly and always ask how your day has been and also you get your laundry with towels washed every day. Very nice hotel! Still needs some decorating but I’m sure once that’s all done, the building will be stunning!

On arrival we were told that they were about to let our room to someone else as we arrived late. They apparently had been trying to call yet not a single missed call on the phone. After insisting we need to prove who we were and having to email a copy of her driving license to them, we asked how long they keep our personal information as we were concerned. They said they don’t know but we couldn’t stay without it so we had no choice. We were not advised of when to come for breakfast and this would come back to bite us in the morning. We were then told our room number. On walking into the room, the people in the room above had extremely loud music on and this was past midnight by now. I went back to reception and reported this and thankfully it stopped shortly after. On walking into the room we were presented with a wall that had obviously suffered from some water damage. There was a big hole and water stains all over it. The carpet in the room was uneven and a potential trip hazard. The bedside lamp had been unplugged and the wire was extended with a terminal block very badly and potentially dangerously. We did not touch it. The plug socket next to the bed was hanging off of the wall so couldn’t use that. The bed was actually not too bad and was quite comfortable. We woke up in the morning and after getting ready to go to breakfast just after 9am. On arrival at reception we were told breakfast finished at 9am. We were told that we should have known that. I advised I wasn’t told and their was nothing in the room advising of this. All we got was I am really sorry but it’s too late. We immediately went back to our rooms, grabbed our bags and left. The initial staff member we spoke to on reception was not interested in being helpful and offered no advice other than to tell us he nearly let a room we paid for to someone else. My opinion of this hotel is avoid at all costs. They don’t seem to care and the state of the place is a disgrace. The price was not cheap either. If you stay here, you are taking your chances.

Booked last minute, forgot to ask for ground floor room as I have mobility issues and they said all lower floor were taken. Our room was first floor which was three flights of stairs. The room smelt like smokers had been in there, it looked like it had been painted recently, but not professionally finished. Bathroom was tiny and had an awful back smell to it from the vent system. There was no plug hole to the sink and no soaps/toiletries. There was nowhere to hang clothes or towel in bathroom and no bath mat. The bathroom hadn’t been cleaned properly, was scum and water/soap marks round the outside edges of the shower. The small glass shelf was dusty and there were no glass provided in the bathroom. The painting and finishing off wasn’t done. There was a big hole on the floor behind the sink. I accidentally spilt water and it all went down the hole before I got chance to clean it. I’m the room itself the beds did look freshly made but no vacuuming had been done. It looked like the room had been made up quickly!! The beds were clean on inspection which was something and the mattress was comforting. There was a big round table between the beds (which I’m guessing would usually be under the window). There was a small desk with kettle on and packets of tea, coffee and milk. Tv above on the wall. Hairdryer in drawer which you had to crawl under the desk to plug in to socket as it was fixed in. There was no chairs or stool in the room to sit on to do makeup or put clothes/bags on. No hooks to hang coats. An old empty wardrobe was in the room but had no hangers inside. The curtains were old and needed a good wash as did the net curtains throughout the building. As for the carpets, well they were a mess. Stained and dirty in the room, would hate to think what had been spilled into the carpets. The carpets on the stairs and landings had paint marks on nearly all of them. I would not walk with bare feet. The dining room was nicely presented and a decent enough breakfast was available. However no Halal, which considering the area and the owners I found strange. However there were cereals and juice, coffee and English breakfast. A lovely lady was on hand in the kitchen to make tea and toast. The reception staff were very friendly at all times. Parking was a big plus for us. This hotel has a lot to work on. Even the small additions could make a whole lot of difference!!!! Please try harder then you would be a nicer place to stay!!!
