I don't like writing negative reviews, but there's no way around this. We had 5 nights booked in the Alaula Suite, but left the property after two. As soon as we arrived to the room, we decided we were not comfortable staying and wanted to leave, so spent half a day researching alternative hotels which meant we lost a day of our holiday which is a shame as we were visiting for honeymoon. Pro's: 1. The room was large, so could accommodate for additional guests. 2. Check-in was easy (although you'll need a US phone or the ability to call abroad to contact the inn-keeper). 3. It was secluded, we didn't see another single person whilst there (including the inn-keeper after check-in). We were able to access our room an hour earlier than check-in as the inn-keeper had finished turning it over. 4. If you're interested in visiting Captain Cook's Monument, or the Captain Cook area, then it's very close. 5. The internet is good, and there's a new TV with a large number of channels (be wary though of what previous guests have searched for on youtube....!) Con's: 1. The smell in the bathroom, I can't explain it, but we didn't want to use the bathroom. 2. Cleanliness; the sofabed was stained, the fridge was dirty (although we asked the inn-keeper to clean it straight away which she did), the shower curtain was stained and mouldy and there were ants along the kitchen side. Regarding the ants, yes the property is in the jungle, but I don't think leaving an ant infestation on/around an area designed for food preparation is adequate. 3. The property and bathroom was DATED, the bathroom especially. 4. The wallpaper was peeling off the walls, I don't know how that's acceptable to leave as-is. 5. The air-con units were old and weak. We had both on full and it took hours for the room to cool down so when we took a closer look we realised the filters were completely clogged and looked like they'd never been cleaned. Not acceptable. 6. There's no blind on the porch door so anyone walking past could look straight in facing the bed. 7. The porch furniture was dirty and broken, we didn't want to sit out there at all. As I said, we arrived, we didn't feel comfortable staying, so we decided to move hotels. I informed the owner via Email, and we had a brief Email exchange. She offered compensation which sounded great, but after a few Emails, the compensation she was offering was a free visit next year after the room was renovated. I informed her we live in the UK, have a small child and this visit was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our honeymoon so returning wouldn't be possible for us. I asked what other compensation could be offered and I heard nothing......I'm still waiting for a response.....sounds like a hollow offer.
