Abalone Guest Lodge

Such a shame a few small things let’s this property down it could have been so much better. Unbeatable location for whale watching. However charging for breakfast items such as water, coffee and orange juice is unacceptable when paying these prices. Our room was freezing as the underfloor heating wasn’t working but the manager sorted it out straight away the following morning. Would I go back? No. Did it spoil my overall holiday? No.

The staff were very helpful & friendly. Always on hand to answer questions. We had an afternoon pickup to the airport and instead of going into town, they sorted lunch out for us which they didn’t usually do. The food whilst we stayed was fantastic, Our room faced the sea and we were able to watch whales from our balcony. A great place to stay and we will be going back.

I am afraid we had a very disappointing visit to Abalone Lodge. Took approximately 60 minutes to check in. Only ONE person, the guest liaison person, was on duty on the entire property. He tried his best to get us checked in, but literally had to try and do EVERYTHING himself. Everything from luggage to getting the room sorted out, offering welcome drinks (helped ourselves), administration and everything else one would expect from a 4 star establishment Spoke to a local restaurateur where chose to have dinner that night, and he said he had heard of the staffing issues and had in fact spoken to the property owners about complaints he had heard. Apparently to no avail though! NO turndown service. NO Chef on duty for dinner that we requested the previous day - he was apparently too tired. Too tired - really? NO manager on duty - he was on the property, but on 'vacation' so we had fleeting glimpses of him in his baggies! Rooms were nice though, both of them! Stayed over at 'The Marine' the previous night, and it in every way, put Abalone Lodge, to shame! Will recommend that my travel agent, in future, choose alternative options for US clients when booking accommodation in the Hermanus area.
