The Tan Hill Inn

My husband and I read the website and looked at some social media reviews and placed our trust in some well known media personalities whom raved about the Tan Hill Inn. We booked a superior suite as a treat for us en route to a trip further north. Following a 6hr drive, we were met with a Kurt welcome and were ‘told’ we had to wait for our room to be prepared. We bought a drink and duly waited. My first impressions of the entire place were not positive. It was dirty, untidy, unloved and not at all what I would call anyway acceptable. Once eventually inside the suite, it was a world away from what we had viewed on the website. I would understand some wear and tear, however there were damp patches in the bathroom which was also filthy with scum marks on the sink that clearly hadn’t been cleaned, a bin full of the previous guests unsanitary rubbish and the room had what looked like a melted and exposed electrical cable within the fireplace. On a positive note, the bed looked clean and was comfortable. We had to eat and so went for our pre-booked table. We waited an hour for food. The service was slow (I understand it was busy but the feeling I got from the staff was just a complete lack of care). The food was inedible as it was cold and so I sent it back. We went to bed hungry and exhausted. We had a group of loud drunk guys in the room adjacent to us who tried our door in the night several times (presumably drunk) and kept us awake until gone 3am. With no one to contact and being so isolated we felt trapped. We couldn’t wait to leave in the morning. We skipped breakfast and made a hasty retreat. Having read previous negative reviews I expect a sarcastic response, which to my mind sums up the managements’ complete lack of respect for paying customers.

Brought my Dad to stay at the highest pub in England and we both loved it! Food was delicious, we ordered chicken wings, halloumi fries for starters. We ordered the lamb Yorkshire pudding & the beef stew Yorkshire pudding. Portions were huge but still super tasty! Staff were friendly, inn was cosy, with a fire & the twin room was clean & comfortable.

The Tan Hill Inn is a super pub with comfortable rooms, real fires and excellent ales from the local Black Sheep brewery. If you’re in the area, or even down in Somerset as we are, it really is worth the drive for a pie and pint. And the views over the moors are breathtaking to boot.

Stayed here for a single night in their bunk room. I was greeted by very friendly staff who showed me to my room. Had the bunk to myself which was great. Clean & comfortable room with new crisp sheets etc. Clean modern private shower room next to dorm. Evening meal was good & great value. There is a large choice of ales/beers & single malt whiskey which made my night. Great local band played for about 2 hrs which was a nice surprise. Breakfast was great with a large choice to suit all. A very satisfied customer. Would recommend to anyone. Thank you Tan Hill Inn

Sadly our 4th trip wasn’t as good as normal. Dome smelt mouldy. Main light didn’t work,Gate was broken Banging in the wind had to use a brick not ideal when going to the toilet at night. Door plank of wood stuck on door & new lock not repaired properly wind kept blowing it open. Open biscuits in room from previous guests not checked. Floor soaking wet in room. Tea- seat broken had to put cushion under. Seat dirty not been wiped Tried to email 3 times but getting ignored. Sad as we love this place.

Our stay at Tan Hill Inn was an absolute delight, and the scenic drive from Sunderland made it all the more worthwhile. We booked one of the domes for the night, which was wonderfully cozy, equipped with plenty of heaters and an electric blanket on the double bed—perfect for a chilly evening. The toilet facilities were conveniently located inside the main building, just a short walk away. The pub itself exudes charm, with roaring open fires and a fantastic selection of beers, wines, and spirits. Our evening meal was exceptional—a giant Yorkshire pudding generously filled with tender brisket and a delicious homemade lasagna. Breakfast the next morning didn’t disappoint either, with a hearty full English, freshly made toast, and plenty of tea and coffee to set us up for the day. The whole experience was incredibly relaxing, and waking up to a dusting of snow just added to the magic. A truly memorable stay—we can’t wait to return!
