Hambleton Hall

Well not sure what else to say - we have been staying here for many many years and it remains what it is - one of the best country house hotels in the UK. The style is just right and no where really matches it - the rooms lovely with great furnishing and wonderful bedding. Bathrooms can be small - but all perfect. The dining as the long held Michelin star attests is fab and wonderful personal wine advice from Dominique. Needless to say all the staff are kind, thoughtful and professional. You will have your favorite room or rooms. Of course there are things which one would do differently but that’s a personal matter! Top tips - check out is at 12noon so why not have breakfast in your dressing gown in your room - available until 10am rather than in the dining room which stops at 9.30am! Also check out the beautiful garden and walled veg garden. The heated outdoor pool is warm in the summer. Great local walks. Practicalities Large bottle filtered water in the room All bath room toiletries you would expect by Penhaligon Shortbread biscuits No tea or coffee making facilities in the room - but just order it!

We stayed one night in the Fern Room. Well wow, just wow. Everything was simply perfect. Amazing room and view over the water, ever from the bath! There was nothing amiss, great lighting in the bathroom, sockets where you need them, magnified make up mirror, comfortable (huge) bed. We enjoyed a relaxing afternoon in the lounge by the fire before our fantastic dinner. Chatting to fellow guests, all of whom were returning so that says it all really. We are not really foodies, typically we avoid anything that involves tweezers but this was a real treat. The dining room was intimate and well set out, not on top of your fellow diners. The food was amazing, cooked to perfection, the service was faultless. Great wine selection by the glass and charming sommelier. Wish we had booked for two nights as I struggled to decide on my choice of lamb (Hubby had venison) both delicious. Outstanding cheese board served by a very knowledgeable young lady Tabby, wonderful English cheeses accompanied by a superb glass of port, the perfect end to a perfect meal. Breakfast - ditto, nice full English though we had to ask for proper toasting bread (not that sourdough that takes the roof off your mouth!) which duly arrived with no fuss. Signed up for the mailing list and can't wait to return.

I stayed here for 2 nights with my partner in September as we were attending a wedding nearby. The hotel grounds are stunning, well maintained and beautiful. I couldn’t fault anything. The staff are friendly, welcoming and attentive. Thank you for your hospitality and we will certainly be back whenever we’re next in the area.

Perfection We have stayed here several times in different rooms over the last few years. It has been consistently good. Delicious food, comfort and amazing staff. (Ignore recent reviews on this site). Yes it is ‘traditional’ not ‘buzzy’ and does attract a more mature crowd but that is what makes it great. It is the perfect place to go and switch off from the world. The gardens are wonderful and the swimming pool the perfect temperature and beautifully maintained . If you like delicious healthy food and an amazing experience you can do no better.

Lovely location/property but food or service not up to scratch. I just had my first overnight stay at Hambleton Hall last week with my business partner. We booked a room with dinner included, which was not cheap but what you would expect to pay for a quality luxury experience. We are both regular customers at The Ritz, Claridge's, Scott's Mayfair etc and other London quality eateries/hotels, so understand the joy of good food, wine and impeccable service. The hotel, location and room were amazing and the gardens/setting wonderful. The service and the food though, was not up to expectations for us, sadly. We waited to be served drinks on the terrace upon arrival for a good 10 minutes but in the end had to step inside ourselves to find a server to take our order. I am a vegan but my business partner is not, so he experienced the full menu over dinner. The wine was not poured once during the meal but plonked on the table as the waiters were clearing and setting up empty tables around us before we had finished dining. The crab starter was bland and the salad starter very poor but the rest of the vegan offering was good. The cheese board was extensive but the portions were rationed by the server. We were not asked if we wanted more wine, as the empty bottle sat on the table for ages plus not offered any after dinner drinks. The service was truly terrible over dinner and the atmosphere in the dining area was deathly quiet with zero atmosphere. We retired in the end to the bar area to get away from the servers clearing and setting up tables in the restaurant around us to get an after dinner drink. The barman was busy washing glasses, as we waited 20 minutes to be served, even though the bar was empty, so in the end, we left without drinks. In his reply to my feedback, the owner asked why we didn't just catch his attention but by this time we were a little fed up with a lack of attention to detail. We actually felt like we were an invisible inconvenience with money to spend but no one willing to serve us for it. The scrambled eggs at breakfast were watery and tasteless and the service slow and unenthusiastic. I wanted to talk to the reception staff before we left when paying the bill but she was dealing with checkouts in a very small area that felt like Piccadilly circus. her own words, so I left it to deal with later. I decided to write to the owner NOT for a freebie or refund but to give some honest feedback, rather than write a poor review on here. He wrote back after investigating my feedback projecting with excuses and somewhat dismissing our disappointment as not what others normally say about the hotel and service. This to be honest annoyed me and was not humble or caring, so I am writing the review. It is a beautiful property, a little dated with in my opinion, poor service, inexperienced staff and in our case, on this occasion, over priced and disappointing for the anticipated experience. Another lovely stay at Hambleton Hall. We are always made to feel welcome at this very homely hotel. The food as always was absolutely superb and the service friendly and welcoming. We’ve been here with extended family in the summer and enjoyed swimming in the pool and walking around the lake. We’ve been here for New Year’s Eve on two occasions and my wife and I have stayed here as a couple and with our two dogs. We have always felt very welcome and the staff do everything they can to accommodate requests. Looking forward to our next stay when we might even consider bringing our young children.
