Gualala Surf Inn on the Ocean Bluff

So first of all me and my family go every year for the fireworks that they do in point arena and when i mean family i mean uncles, cousins, siblings, and parents we all book our own hotel where ever we find available. So me and my cousin got a hotel here and when my cousin had checked in first and i don't know what happened but i guess they got into it because i guess you can only book a room with one bed for 2 people and no more can be in that room so when i went in and told her my last name she gave me a big as attitude i had book a room with double beds which can have 4 people but some how they messed up and gave me a room with one bed i guess she saw that and she started to make a big fit with me but then i showed her my confirmation email that i had book a double room so she fixed it and gave me another room my point is that it doesn't matter if we are related she shouldn't had came at me like that it wasn't my problem that she got in a bad mood after the altercation with my cousin that wasn't my problem i was still a paying customer we are two very different people. Never again will i book here and i will also tell my family not to book here. Very bad experience the only thing good she did is fix my room problem but still she shouldn't have treated me that way it doesn't matter if we are related.

The Surf Inn is conveniently located and right on the ocean-side though you can’t easily walk to the water. The rooms are “quaint” with a large-ish bathroom, television, refrigerator and microwave. There isn’t much available floor space though there is room in the closet inside the bathroom for a suitcase or two. The bed was fine, despite some other less-flattering reviews, and the room was dated but okay. There is a nice are to sit and watch the ocean, use the fire pit or have a cookout with the permission of the management. The office staff were pleasant and helpful. Oh, the Surf Inn is adjacent to the grocery which is really great. On Saturday mornings there is a farmer’s market a few minutes walk away. We were satisfied with our experience and the price was as good as you can get in Gualala.

I really really really wanted to like this place, but it's just ok. I have to say the bed was like a medieval torture device. It goes up in the middle and down on the sides so you constantly feel like you're going to roll out. It's hard and feels like it has metal springs that are going to poke through the mattress. The refrigerator made a very loud humming noise all night, and the AC was dripping water. Now here's the kicker, the owner wrote up an information sheet for the room, and it says, "if the AC starts dripping, just turn it off" ok, then what? Just sweat all night? Or I don't know, maybe get it fixed so it doesn't drip???? To me, that's not an acceptable response to an obvious situation in need of repair. You don't tell your customers not to use a standard feature of the room just because you don't want to get it repaired. Other than that, the room was clean and quaint. Not at all updated since the early 90's. But if you want a clean room by the ocean, and you can sleep through loud noises, tortuous beds, and no AC, then this is the place to go!

We spent one night at the Surf Inn in April 2023, and I wish we could have stayed longer. The location right on Highway 1 is in the center of town, walking distance to all the great food and views of the ocean; it's a short drive to state parks. The manager is incredible. She was easy to reach, easy to talk to, accommodating for our slightly later check-in after a fishing trip and super knowledgable of the best food nearby. The room itself was cozy and had everything required - fridge, coffee, comfy bed, heater. We look forward to going to Surf Inn again for our weekend spearfishing adventures.

fairly funky hotel. They clean all the sheets, but somehow the bed is all piled up in the middle--I have no idea why....you can see this phenomenon in photos of others. the check -in was off-putting because the person was so controlling...beyond that the place is fixed up but at the same time run down...the heat worked pretty well and so did the AC...the internet was fine...the walls are thin so you can hear the people in nearby rooms. They are nice about giving extra towels. The view is incredible--but you can only see the parking lot from all but 2 of the rooms...it is weird because it would have one of the nicest views of any hotel in the world if it were turned a bit more sideways but as it is, for most of the rooms you might as well be in the valley. Like most motels, there is little ventilation so I kept my door open to allow some free flow of air, which made it much nicer... I recommend staying here but only if you are ok with a bit of a funky motel...
