The Swan Inn

Looking forward to a Sunday roast until I noticed they add 12.5% to your bill. Absolutely no problem tipping in excess of this but would like the option of judging the service first. Even if the food is not up to scratch but the service is excellent I am happy to pay. But I will not give a venue the money to pay somebody. It should always be the customers choice.

We stayed for two nights and met with 22 more family members for a meal in the barn on the second night for a 60th birthday celebration . We had 2 double rooms and 1 twin room and all were superb. The presentation of each room, the small personal touches such as soft classical music playing from the radio in the bedroom when we arrived, the guided tour of the honesty room and clear instructions for the rooms facilities made us feel instantly welcome. The staff are fantastic, the food is exquisite and I can’t wait to return.

I could not fault it if I tried! Total and utter perfection. We stayed in Elgar and I can not recommend enough! The food is amazing as well.

We have wanted to come since the pub reopened based on the strength of the reviews. Booked through Mr and Mrs Smith but could have easily booked direct. Room 10, Elgar - at the end of the corridor on first floor and not above the pub. It was quiet but a little road noise early in the evening before the traffic died down which it did given the rural location. Lovely room, could not fault. The pantry has great cakes and the like plus a very well stocked honesty bar with some stunning wines. Breakfast was good and one of the best kippers I have ever had ! We slightly struggled with the dinner menu as staying two nights. On the second night, the only special was a large piece of beef, too large for a single person as the smaller size had sold out. The poussin on a bed of tomatoes was a little too full of tomatoes. Good not great I am afraid. Service was friendly but other tables had missing dishes which in one case never appeared. Charming pub / hotel, worth trying as in a great location and they are still feeling their way

After all the PR earlier this year it was difficult to get a table. But things have eased and we dined last week in a half empty restaurant. The menu was unusual and not much appealed to us. The prices were high as this was standard pub decor, bare wood tables, etc, not a smart restaurant. The wine list was extensive and mostly very expensive, but we just had a glass or two. The food was not very good and the pretty serving damsels were a bit pushy. For example, the liver was cut in chunks and overcooked and the prosciutto was fresh from the packet. I am local, but there are two other posh pubs that are much better with owners in attendance supervising everything

We had a lovely stay at the Swan Inn. The entire property is tastefully decorated, the room was very comfortable, and the staff were so kind and welcoming. The fact that JMW Turner used to stay there made the stay extra special. As a side, we were not aware of the planning required for booking a taxi and when we found out there would be an hour wait, without us asking, the staff offered to take us to the train station, as we had a flight out of Gatwick that morning! Amazing.
