Express Inn Harrisburg South New Cumberland

I really dislike writing negative reviews, but unless and until this hotel takes cleaning more seriously, I feel a duty to my fellow travelers. The strong, sour odor in my 1st room made me recoil. With no openable windows to air out the room, I knew the stench would be deeply embedded in my luggage, clothing, skin, hair and lungs in no time. I lugged my stuff down the stairs and out the building (no elevator) to ask for another room. (They didn't answer their phone when I used the room phone.) In the parking lot, I ran into a couple who were putting their luggage INTO their car. At 10pm. I asked if they had a stinky room by any chance. "Yes, and terribly filthy." They decided that, because they booked through a 3rd party (*******) - which prohibits refunds or cancellations -they would rather lose their $160 than stay. They decided to drive through the night to their final destination. They were relieved to see that I was not happy, since they thought maybe they were losing their minds over nothing. This was now my stark choice to make as well, since I used ***********: no refunds. For me, I thought I should at least try a second room, instead of losing the $160 and way too much sleep, and risking a sleep-deprived drive through the middle of the night during deer hunting season (when they are a bit crazier than usual). The problem was, there were almost no reasonably priced rooms available in the whole region around Harrisburg this weekend. (Leaf peepers?) I would have slept in my car, but it got below freezing that night and I didn't have a sleeping bag. Anyway, the 2nd room didn't smell as bad as the first. My shoe stuck to a 3.5 inch blotch of unknown substance on the carpet when I put down my luggage, and I saw other obvious things like a large dark spill staining the upholstery on a seat. If they couldn't be bothered with cleaning up things as obvious as those, I felt compelled to guard against everything, including the worst I could think of, which is bedbugs. I checked for the signs (none), but still I put everything I had into my hardshell luggage, sealed it up quickly, and placed it away from everything, standing upright on the wheels. Besides my clothesless body, the only thing of mine not sealed off from the room was my phone. I got into bed, watched the TV's headache-inspiring fuzzy picture (turns out it was endemic to the whole hotel system, since the lobby TV had the same issue). Trying to fall asleep, I realized it was actually cold in the room, though I thought I turned the heat on. I corrected that, and when the heat element warmed (probably for the first time in months) the smell of burning hair, dust, and skin flakes was overpowering! Gack! I slept cold instead of choking on the horrendous odors that warmth would bring. In the morning light, I noticed someone's long black hairs in the sheets. Funny. I didn't remember inviting anyone to bed with me. Disgusted, I still decided against a shower after I looked at the aged towel
