Mata Te Ki Rangi Cabanas are somewhat primitive but spacious apartments with a nice terrace in front and green surroundings. The place is located 3 km from the town with its shopping and restaurants, so many will likely depend on a car (or taxi) to get something to eat. We walked back and forth once a day, and it worked fine. There are no toiletries or kitchen essentials, so everything must be purchased or brought along. At dawn, the area's dogs and roosters go crazy in a noise orgy that could wake the dead. Remember earplugs! The place's wifi comes and goes as the wind blows. Communication with the host is a bit difficult, as she is often away for several days at a time (we never actually met her, only the taciturn driver who picked us up at the airport). The best feature of these cabanas is the solitary, very soulful, and thoughtful moai that stands 7 minutes down the road towards the Pacific Ocean.
