Third stay at this hotel as it strikes the right balance for us for Alton Towers trips. Far enough out to be a cheaper stay, but close enough to get to the park easily. However the changes to the restaurant this year have meant that we will be looking for an alternative in future. The closure of the adjoining pub and opening of “The Social” in house restaurant has had a negative impact. Previously I’ve invited friends to join us for our evening meal in the pub and it’s been lovely. The new restaurant space is located in the ground floor bedroom corridor behind a keycard access door. The space is clean and bright but not welcoming as a “social” space. The kids didn’t want to stay after eating and there is no longer an outdoor space for them to enjoy. The one toilet is located in reception so even though it’s still open to the public, non staying visitors would need to be let through to the restaurant. The menu is dramatically reduced compared with other premier inn restaurant brands such as beefeater and thyme and the menu is generally underwhelming in its appeal. A table sign offering 2for1 cocktails gave us hope that the uninviting feel of the restaurant as a space to spend the evening, might be just down to our personal preference, but alas, there were only two cocktails on offer. I’ve always enjoyed staying at premier inn and taking advantage of the excellent value meal deals, but this experience of the new restaurant brand will make me double check the dining option for future bookings and avoid hotels with the social branding. Of course the rooms, cleanliness, beds, showers etc are all of the standard you’d expect from a premier inn, and the staff are all happy to chat about your visit, and offer help. Breakfast was also consistent at living up to expectations with all the usual options. I would stay here again if I wasn’t wanting to eat evening meals or spend the evening at the hotel with kids.
